Yes
I was hoping to get the 24" iMac but it looks like this has been vetoed by She Who Must Be Avoided because it will "dominate the room". :annoyed:

For those of you with the 20" version, are you happy with it and do you ever regret buying the smaller screen?

24" is just showing off.

I work day in day out on a 20" (not photography work, but some graphics stuff) and have never really wished for anything bigger.

24".

Anything above starts to get a bit too much - anything below has a feeling of inadequacy

 I had exactly the same problem. "will dominate the room blah blah blah...(I'd switched off by that point)"

Got the 20" 6 months ago and it's absolutely fine, I really haven't given the 24" a thought since. Might be because I do a lot of my work on a macbook pro that the 20" still seems huge everytime I sit down infront of it.

What the missus doesn't know is that I'm already planning the MacPro with twin 32" monitors :suspect:

Thanks Lee!

I have a 20" TFT and i still want more desktop real estate.

Inadequacy? You know my wife then!

You're a brave man. Stupid, but brave. Thanks for the feedback!

LOL @ the above.
I have the 20" mainly because of money but I honestly have never thought I wish I had the bigger one. That said it is mighty impressive :)
Also when I tell non mac people I bought the small one they think I'm taking the wee wee.

Colin, I have the 20" imac which is big enough, but "command +/-" lets you zoom in/out, to where ever you need.

Hanne (marion38) on here was going to go for the 24inch iMac. Having seen it in the Mac shop in Kingston she decided to for the 20inch instead as the larger one was too big.

Trouble is she knows I'm talking about replacing my desktop pc in the future. I think this will start a pc v mac debate between us!!

It's not just the screen size

The 20" can only have 2.66GHz Intel Core 2 Duo and a ATI Radeon HD 2600 PRO with 256MB

The 24" can be 3.06GHz Intel Core 2 Duo and NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GS with 512MB

i was in PC world today looking at them and the 20" would do me just find but god the 24" rocks :notworthy: i'll be saving just a little longer to get that one!

Well, I purchased my 24" a while ago now and could never go back to 20". 24" really doesn't seem that big after a while, also - it doesnt really dominate the room either because the styling is so subtle (it's not White for one).

Doooo it!

Tell her bigger is better (thats if she has been saying that relating to other matters!) if she says no it's not well you have a least won another argument ;-)

I have 24" iMac and would never move down from this size screen, however i'm sure a 20" would be fine.

i have the 20" and its great.

24"

I had the 20" and it's not just screen size. The panel on a 20" is the cheaper variation (TN? I can't remember). Big lawsuit in the US because Apple have started using them in the 20"es

Anyway, when I took my 20" back as faultty, and they offered to change it, I took the chance to pay the extra for the 24" and haven't looked back since.

The 24" is only 4" bigger on the diagonal so according to Pythagorus that only makes it slightly more than 2"'s wider and 2"'s taller.

So once again a women is complaining about a couple of inches !!

Thanks whiteflyer although all of that means diddlysquat to me. :) Is that good?

30" and mac mini FTW :D

Behave yourself. :nono: :p

I like your thinking! I might expand on that approach a bit more.

Yes. Sell me your D3 for the balance between them and everyone's happy :p

I have a 24-inch iMac and it rocks. 20-inch iMacs don't. Do you really need any more convincing?

I have both. I'm now on my 24" but if I turn around on my swivel chair, I'm in front of my 20" :D

The 20" is brilliant. But why should that stop you from getting one which is simply awesome? Tell the gaffer that you need the 24" for the extra cpu powah!

For what it's worth, there are rumors that Apple will update the iMac range early in 2009. I suspect it'll be along the same lines as the Mac Book upgrades late in 2008. Plus it looks as though they will be getting the new Intel quad core processors

But as I said it's just a rumor

Thanks to everyone for their input!

Funnily enough, that was going to be my next question. Any idea what the updates might be?

my friend has a 20" and i thought it was massive, but then i got my 24" and its amazing, i dont think i would need anything bigger.. ever...
my mates looks tiny and not sure if i would be able to use it now after using mine for so long.

but now i have a 32" tv near it, the iMac looks tiny, so... get the 24" and buy a bigger tv, the iMac will look small and your missus will never know.

i know this isnt helping.... sorry.

Rumour mill thinks it'll be first quarter 2009. same rumour mill was reasonably correct about new Mac Books.

But again it's just a rumour

Thanks Marcel!

I went out to buy it this afternoon and the bloody thing wasn't in stock. :bang: :bang:

:bat:

im gutted for you, did they say when they expect them back in? so what are you thinking of getting?

Hi Chris, we :| decided on the higher specced 20" model, they have them in stock elsewhere so I might pop out tomorrow and get it. You know what it's like though - you make your decision, go out to buy and they don't have it!

I have procastinated over buying the 24" for months - desire tells me to do it, rumours tell me to wait. The main worry for me is the lack of the upgrade path - you walk out of the shop and what you have is what you will have for years.

If you plan to buy from Apple, remember that a number of large companies have and employee discount - certainly the civil service has - and loads of others. The worst is that you might not save 6%.

Chris

I would wait till next week JUST in case there is an announcement. If you are willing to pay £100+ for an upgrade then waiting till next week and finding that they have upgraded the entire line and the cheapest model now has the spec of the model you paid more for will be a bitter pill. There will most likely be an announcement next week and it IS likely to be a new mac mini but there is definitely a chance of a upgraded iMac AND models being out of stock is a sure fire hint !!!

Also 4" is hardly going to make much difference to the room but it does make a big difference to your useable screen real estate! I think negotiating to get the 24 would be the way forwards.

You will not be disappointed with either though but I really would wait!

I went on the bigger is better theory & I can tell you, i am glad I went with bigger. It is pretty impressive eye candy & it is so thin it barely takes room my desk. I can actually fit 3 of them on it.

Not only that, I compared the pictures of the different sizes, the 24" is much sharper.

This post seems to have scraped through without being noticed, the 20" iMac doesn't display as many colours as the 24". It may not be a problem if you are going to do your editing on an external monitor, but that would be the decider for me...

ok went to see the 30" screen. Nowhere near as impressive as the 24. Not glossy for a start, and I love the gloss. The force is strong with the 24" iMac, not sure I can wait. If an upgrade is announced, I will stick this in the kitchen? :D

I want it...

Should I?

Gary.
