I have a D300 with a 17-55mm f2.8 DX lens and will soon be upgrading to a D3 shortly. Now I know that the 24-70mm will be a great match for my D3 so i'm thinking of getting one now as I've seen one for a good price. What will this be like on my D300 compared to my 17-55mm

24 x 1.5 = 36mm so not that wide, but a nice lens to use til your D3 arrives. I used the 24-70 on a Nikon D2h when my D3 was with Nikon and no worries, it delivered the goods.

Cheers mate will start the ball rolling about selling my 17-55mm and grab this lens. ;)

If I may come in, late to this ....

I had that combination .. D300 & 24-70 AF-S, and both are sexy (if that can me said about such items).

As has been said, already, not very wide .. but nice enough, and at the 70mm end, a very nice reach to it.

On FX, the 24-70 was ultra-sexy. I only sold it as I am moving to all primes, but of course, like many of the stuff I sell, I regret it every day. May be after a year, or so, with primes, I will go back to zoom and this is a sure re-buy for me.

You might help me out with another question, I used my 17-55mm for land scape and it range seemed spot on. Am I thinking the 24-70mm is not going to cover the same range and if not what would you suggest for my landscape work on D3

For me, the 24-70 was perfect for landscape on FX. When I had the D300, I also had the Sigma 10-20 which, at close to 20mm was really nice.

Back to the 24-70. At 24, it was really wide when mounted on FX. I thought may be something wider would suffice, so I got the Sigma 20 f/1.8, but it is way too wide on FX .. not my piece of cake really. It's OK, but I much prefer the range inbetween 24-70.

I now use the 35 f/2 mostly, for landscapes and hardly ever use the 20 f/1.8

Thanks for that info I do have a Sigma 10-20mm but that's being sold as well to fund my move over to full frame. Looks like i'll just stick with the 24-70mm ;)

You can't go wrong with that choice. It is a "must" have lens.

Snapper, where are you getting your 24-70? Are you buying new or used? If new and they've stock in, care to share where?

I can confirm that Wail's 24-70 gives great results on crop sensors. I bought it off him a month ago and it was living on my D200 (until my D700 arrived yesterday :D).

It wasn't much cop for landscape shots (I kept my 18-70 for that - as landscapes don't usually need f2.8) but for most other normal shots etc. it's fabulous.

P.S. I would definitely get the lens before the body, plus if you are in to Landscapes consider the D700, smaller, lighter and cheaper and you won't need the 9fps of the D3, 5fps of D700 is more than enough for Landscapes.
