Quick queery about this Cannon lens, would it work just as well if not better than the 24-105 F4 on a 400d? I understand that the 400d is a crop frame, but in the future I will probably upgrade to the 5d

The main complaint is the wide end, 24mm isn't that wide on a crop body. My solution was to get a 10-22mm but that isn't gonna work for the jump to full frame.

The 24-105 has the nice IS feature that the 24-70mm doesn't have and the extra length is probably more desirable for a walk about lens.

The wider aperture on the 24-70mm will get you faster and more accurate focusing in lower light than the f/4. But the IS will allow you to get sharper shots at lower shutter speeds.

The both have good and lesser points it is just a case of choose based on what you shoot. Both lenses seem very good, I have been considering a 24-105mm for my 2nd body for a bit of extra length as a walk about lens.

I used to have a 40D with the 24-105. When I got a 5D it was more use at the wide end although I always regretted not having the speed of the 2.8. With FF in mind and hindsight I'd reccomend the 24-70 2.8

I was in a similar dilemma asking near enough the same question about both lens's. In the end i opted for the 24-70 2.8 as my photography will require the speed of the 2.8. It weighs a ton but the lens is superb and i havent regretted the decision since, although i have been tempted with the 24-105 since i will be getting a lens ranging 70 - 200 which will fill the gap if needed. The moral of this story is what will suit your photography best, range or speed?

Your Choice

Good Luck

I'd been looking at the 24-70 also, however I notice a lot of people are recommending the 17-55 IS USM as a general walk about lens for a crop body.

Not an easy decision!

If you shoot in low light a lot then the extra stop is well worth it. If you don't then the 24-105 will be fine. In fact in my Canon days I found the IQ of the 24-105 to be much better than the 24-70.

I hate to answer a question with a question, but what do you intend shooting with your lens?

I don't want to hijack the OP's thread but I guess the info may help him!
I shoot a large variety of stuff, kids & family, abstract but really just finding my feet atm.

I have a 70-200 f4L which is the main reason I want a better walkabout lens, I compare the shots I take on my Tamron 17-50 f2.8 to the canon lens and there is quite some difference.

I find I rarely shoot anything close to 17mm so having a lens with a little extra reach would be nice although I realise on a crop body (30D) the 24-70 would equate to something more like 38-1??. I don't take too many low light shots so that might be a consideration.

Its a lot of cash for a lens but I would hope would keep me going for quite some time!
