Can someone shed some light on IS and when it works best and when it should be turned off? (just opened a new 24-105, my first IS lens)

I pretty much understand what it does, but Ive heard its not for all shots, particularly when tripod mounted?

Does this mean I can let myself hand-hold at lower shutter speeds?

thanks.

Why does IS affect panning shots dude?

wow Ive just been taking test shots at 1/30 and they certainly usable, awesome.

From reading a bit on how it works I imagine panning might confuse the system, it might confuse your panning movement with a shake and try correct the image no?

Because the lens may interpret the panning motion as being something that it should try to correct.

Some lenses have dual mode IS, where you can switch off IS in one axis and leave it working for the other axis.

Depends on focal length of course - at 24mm I've hand-held at 1/3rd of a second with perfect results, and I have quite wobbly hands too.

Yet another reason for me to give the bank card a good smashing for the 24-105L

The 24-105 has a new IS system that automatically detects panning and activates mode 1 or mode 2 as needed.

If its the same as Nikon VR then it will only stabilise the up down motion when panning

Its actually quite cool seeing it in action, I didnt know you could see it so noticably when shaking your camera around, it kinda makes your viewpoint lag behind where it would be normally be with non-IS.

So will it actually help with panning?

Yes

Indeed. It can't do anything about the side to side but the early IS systems needed to be told not to try and correct. Mine live in Mode 2 (vertical only) pretty much all the time as I do a lot of panning and movement stuff. What it does let you do is get sharp images handheld at shutter speeds where without IS you would get shaky pictures.
