Yes
I have a 21st birthday [arty to shoot. I am not sure on how to light it with my 580EXII. I normally do wedding stuff for the first dace etc but this would need to be a bit more edgy I guess? Any tips would be gratefully received!

shoot in the style you are comfortable with.

You have been asked to do it going on current work i presume? and theres nothing more stressful than worrying about loads of new things you are not comfortable with.

People will be getting a bit ****ed up i presume, so being aware is important :D

I agree. They've asked you to do it based in photos they've seen - it might actually be a bad thing to change your style if it's not what they are expecting.

Of course there's no reason not to experiment a bit too - just make sure you get some 'safer' shots that you know they will be happy with.

Actually I have been asked to do it because its for my niece!! However I take your point, it is just that I have seen some super examples on here and I just thought I would like to try and do something a bit more contemporary. (Not that I shoot old fashioned you understand! ;))

Really I was just wondering if there were any nightclub shooters out there who could enlighten me.

im a nightclub shooter.

it depends on the venues so much, and the body even.

Ill shoot different settings for my 1d to my 30D. Generally if you are in a club where the lighting is moving around alot people say drag the shutter for colour, ettl flash.

Ok, thanks for this, I will use my 5DMKII and a 24-105 the club I have no idea about though...perks of being an old fart I guess!!

lose the hood to stop it masking the flash, leave the lens on 24mm

use a speedlight on shoe for its AF assist (one shot AF req) and to expose the subject, I like a manual exposure with ttl flash sorting out the subject personally. I've tried rear curtain sync but it tends to confuse people as they see the preflash and move away

what'd be dead nice is a 580 in a ringflash and a pair of 430s held by assistants one as rim one as key but it aint gonna happen :p

(I have no idea where Althorpe is)
