might sound daft but cant find raw settings on canon 20d any advice

Just a thought, that you either read the manual or download it off the net

I think you have set set it to a mode other than fully auto, ie, not on green, in fully auto mode I believe you can only set jpegs.

You have to be in Program or one of the other modes AV, TV ect. The others will default to jpeg ( don't ask me why!)

Because green square is for ultimate ease, so no raw processing required and the "creative" modes like sports and portrait etc all apply their own processing settings in camera, like contrast, sharpening, colour matrix and so on.
