At present, I have a canon 20d.
I have a 50mm f1.8 and a sigma DC OS 18-200mm lenses.

I know someone who has only recently bought their 550d, but has said they would let me have the 550d body only (plus box etc) for £400 or around £200 if I let give them my 20d too.

What I would like to know is is the 550d worth basically paying 200 quid for as a cheap upgrade? I know it says 18mp and goes to higher ISO etc, but whats the quality compared to 20d really like?

Never seen or looked at a 550d in my own hands so cant be sure what to do. :bang:

I would take it. If you can handle the smaller body the 550D is a better camera.

Check out dimensions online, as for the deal if you go ahead I'd go for £200 and trade in as you won't get more than £200 for 20D no matter how good of a condition. Personally I would take it just for the 1080p video which I'd love to have but you know, may be different in your case.

Its a bit smaller, I swapped my 50D for the 550D though and I don't regret it one bit.

sounds like the general consensus is that the 550d is a fair bit better than the 20d. I just have to speak to the wife, fingers crossed she says it will be ok :D

The higher pixel density means that an 18-200 might not be able to resolve extra detail.

The IQ wouldn't be worse, but you may not get any advantage out of the extra megapixels.

what makes you say that??

Higher pixel density will show up the flaws in lenses if you view pictures at 100%. If you print your images then you have nothing to worry about. Your 50mm will be fine but you might not be happy with the 18-200 if you start pixel peeping. Don't forget the 550D has more than double the pixels of your 20D.

Ahh, good point. I didnt think of that. Something to ponder over thats for sure. I can probably test my lens out on the 550d if I asked him. Might give that a try, and see the results :)

Is there anything about the 20D that disappoints? I think I'd be asking what the newer camera would do for me. Personally I think that the xxD line have better controls and handling than the xxxD line but if the newer camera gives you something more, then go for it.

If I went back to the xxxd series from my xxd now I'd really miss the wheel button on the back and the three buttons on the top by the little display, the 4 direction pad on the xxxd series just doesn't feel as nice to handle to me. I guess you'd just have to get used to it.

I would ask what improvement you want/need from the body over say new glass for a similar investment? more pixels, bigger rear screen or higher iso for low light shooting?

I have a 20D as my chucked in the car back up, back up camera...totally battered but still worthy of some good results.

Personally, I prefer the feel and handling of the xxD range over the xxxD range.

BUT £200 part ex is some good money for a 20D...can't imagine where else you would get that for it! Don't think £400 for the 550 is too dear either!

Cheers

Rob

^^ that is exactly why I was considering it!
Meant to be saving for a newer car as found out recently my mrs is pregnant, and currently have a classic, with 3 doors. Not so bad for toddlers, but newborns is a bit of a pain with this car.

I would be wanting a mix really of higher ISO for low light shooting, and bigger rear screen. The rear screen on the 20d is a bit too small really :(
