2020 Macbook Pro 13" M1. 8 or 16GB?

Just as a heads up; how about getting a refurb unit? (Direct from Apple) They're generally about £200 less so you could pay the same and get higher specs; 12 month warranty and you can buy AppleCare like a new one
They didn’t have any 16GB versions or I would have mate.

You can buy brand new one on ebay for cheaper than the apple refurb price.
Mine just arrived, fully sealed, brand new from scan.
I paid £1048, apple want £1269 for a refurb.

On some days I struggle with 32gb ram. Don't forget disk space. Basic spec of these m1 machines is basically inadequate
Didn't think you could get the M1 ones with 32GB ?

So initial testing shows the 8gb model can handle 10bit h265 200mbs 4K 60fps Fuji videos just fine in Davinci Resolve. Colour graded, transitions and some stabilisation. Very minor lag briefly at the start of the first clip, but playback and scrubbing is fine. Rendering is quick, will do back to back comparison soon.

Lightroom editing is also fine. Changes are instant, switching between images is instant, even importing seemed a touch quicker than my 16inch.

However, I’ve found it’s Achilles heel!

Now bear in mind this is partly caused my Amazon debacle I posted in off topic. I ordered a 1tb nvme drive to arrive today and 3 empty boxes turned up. So I’ve migrated all my 16 inch files onto the 13inch, which were supposed to go on the nvme and not the ssd, so at the moment I’ve only got 4gb of ssd space left!
Trying to merge 20 DJI mavic 2 pro raw files into a 180 degree panorama brought up a low memory error and crashed LR.

So I deleted a load of files to get 80gb back and tried again.. This time it worked but was markedly slower than the 16 inch when initially merging And then processing back to the library.
Interestingly I still had over 1gb of RAM left, but it decided to stick 5gb on the swap memory.

So it works if you have plenty of ssd space left, but is considerably slower than my 16inch with 32gb ram. Again I will reiterate, the m1 cost just over £1k, the 16 inch cost over £3k a year ago.

Another test I did was noise reduction using topaz labs Denoise started via LR.
I tested several images and both loading the plugin, updating the preview and exporting back to LR was noticeably faster than the 16inch. In fact opening the plugin is so fast it barely shows the splash screen before it’s loaded the image and generated the preview.

So far impressed, but I will reserve full judgment until I’ve got the nvme set up with my Lightroom library and video files, leaving much more space on the 512gb ssd.

The bad news is the Nik Collection doesn't seem to work with PS 2021 and the M1 chip, at least not the original collection. Is anyone successfully running the new NC4 via Rosetta? And one of my favourite plugins, Topaz Labs Lens Effects can't be installed on M1 machines, either, which is most annoying.

I suspect Nik is 32bit, therefore can't be installed on the current OSX.

"Nik Collection 4 by DxO, released on 02 June 2021, currently supports Apple M1 chip via Rosetta 2 emulation":
Is Nik Collection 4 by DxO compatible with Apple M1 chips?

The new M1 macs have only two USB C ports... kinda crazy as the older one has 4.. just an FYI!

I got one and then returned it after that, as not worth it just yet for me with only two!

True for the M1 MacBooks, but you can get the M1 iMac with 4 USB-C ports.
Ahh good point! Didn’t realize, I can’t believe they knocked off two ports on the MacBooks though. What were They thinkin..!

My 2018 MBP 15" had four C ports and I still needed adapters and a hub so having two made little difference. A hub will always be required.

True, but only having ports on one side is a bit of a pain, you typically sit on a couch with the power outlet in the opposite direction

I thought the two ports would be an issue, as I have a external nvme drive plugged in, plus usually a card reader and the power..

However, I charge it over night and I don’t need to plug it in again until the next evening, even after heavy video editing and photo editing.

Id still like more, and it is annoying both ports are the same side, but it’s nowhere near as much as an issue as I thought it was going to be.

The 8Gb works fine in most cases and if more memory is needed it uses the fast SSD for swap.
The concern is the amount of swap being written to the SSD and how that will degrade the life of the SSD which is also not replaceable.

I've never paid for Apple memory before but in my case I opted for the 16Gb Mac Mini and so far handled everything I've thrown at it. To ofset the cost of the RAM I opted for the smallest storage and have just plugged in an external 1Tb SSD for storage. OS and Apps on the internal SSD.

Hi, new to the Mac World, what`s the difference between Pro and Air?

It`s just that my wife got me one of these for my Birthday, 1st ever Mac. Struggling a bit wit difference but getting there.

Hi, new to the Mac World, what`s the difference between Pro and Air?
Currently on the new M1 MacBooks, the air is slightly thinner and lighter, purely because it doesn’t have active cooling. The MacBook Pro 13 has an internal fan. Everything else is the same.

The Pro also has a brighter screen
Barely, 500nits vs 400. Very few people would be able to see a difference in real world use.
I also forgot to say the pro has the Touch Bar and the air doesn't, but hardly a deal breaker.

You’ll notice outside in daylight. I use mine outside a fair bit so that was a dealbreaker for me.

I think people have pointed out most of the differences but, if you really push the cpu on an air it has to throttle the cpus because ( as someone has pointed out ) it has no cooling fan.
I have no idea how much this matters on the M1 but I know that on my 13 and 15 i7/gpu c 2014/2015 the fans do come on quite often for processor intensive operations.
Apple seem to be really good at heat management on their ultrabooks unlike some similarly spec’d intel laptops we have had.

I've not pushed mine hard at all but I did watch a video whilst researching and the presenter pushed the MBP to the max until eventually the fans came on but they were barely audible.

The fans on my 2018 i7 get crazy loud sometimes!

On my 16 inch, the fans would come on importing photos to lightroom. I've not yet heard the fan in my 13 inch and I've been editing 4k video, colour grading and using the retime tool for slomo and adding stabilisation.

It's pretty darn impressive. The hottest I've seen it is 60 degrees briefly. My 16 would often hit 90 and stay there, which is fine on a desk but not very comfortable on a lap.

They didn’t knock 2 ports off, the low end Intel MBP that they replaced also only had 2 ports.

Unless you pony up for the extra, the entry-level MacBook Air has only a 7-core GPU, rather than the 8-core GPU that is standard on the MacBook Pro

You may want to check how much difference that makes with any particular applications you may be using.

yeah, they did? I’ve got a 2018 i7 2.7 MacBook 13; bought the M1 with 16GB and 2TB storage (the best currently available) and it only has 2 usbc ports

Finally got the fan on on the 13!
Exporting 1030 full size jpgs for a timelapse. :ROFLMAO:

Exactly, you have the top of the range, with 4 ports, which is still available. The M1 replaced the bottom of the range MBP, which only had 2 ports.
