Some weeks, Rushing to post and then having to "post and be damned" was a negative point for me in 2013...

Hmmm, I can see your point Graham, the "team spirit" was a positive point for me in 2013. My cameras have been getting plenty used btw, I've just not posted the pics online.

As Andy mentioned above, that often used phrase 'it's your 52' certainly holds true but the ethos, I feel of the 52 is that you meet the weekly themes. That is essentially the challenge.

Yes we can all get behind at times, life gets in the way but IMHO and this may be a little contentious is that if a person were to get weeks behind then they are not really meeting the challenge. A few weeks catch up, yes fair enough but some were into months? Yes, I know it's "your 52" but?

The drawback of falling so far behind is that it has a knock on effect with commenting and critique. Lack of comments etc has been mentioned more than once this year. If someone is constantly playing catch up enivitably the comment side of things slips. I always looked on the 52 as a little community but it isn't everyone who are pulling their weight in that respect.

I did say it was a little contentious but please this is all IMHO, feel free to disagree/ignore :D

Iain, I agree with all of your comment above. It is part of the reason that I am unsure if I should commit or not.

more chance of plaiting fog :D That said , there is a selfie I want to do but it involves wearing sunglasses & I need to figure out how to lose reflections........

My apologies to all as well, I'm really not feeling the 52 at the moment ,feeling generally yucky & so struggling to get motivated to shoot for the theme's .Have been very close to throwing in the towel lately but determined to keep going & try again next year . I'm currently up to date with comments but work commitments this week mean I'll not be able to comment until Friday !

well done to all still in....only a few weeks till the final theme....where has the year gone ??

Not having tried it myself, but logic says you'll never "lose" a reflection, all you can do is make sure you're not reflecting something you don;t want to reflect. A carefully placed black card or sheet / tablecloth.

Or I guess if using OCF, if no light is falling on the reflected area, then there's nothing to reflect. Or there's always the clone tool. :D

As Graham says, if you want to avoid reflections, you need to avoid the glossy/shiny subject reflecting anything! Sounds obvious (and unhelpful) when put just like that, but it just needs you to know what the "family of angles" is of the reflective object vis a vis the camera's position. Assuming that sunglasses are (usually) curved, the family of angles in which reflected objects can be seen by the camera can be quite large.

Let's say you want to avoid all reflections apart from a "window" (I've used quotes because a window causes a lot of light spill so is probably best replicated with a gridded softbox with some black tape to simulate window panes). In this case, you need to position your "window" inside the family of angles of the sunglasses lens but apart from that, keep everything else black:

This is my drawing so not exactly artistic! Obviously you have two lenses, but it is the closest lens which has the widest family of angles so will dictate where you need to keep it dark. The other important thing is you need to have the camera outside the family of angles if you want to avoid it reflecting in the glasses. Finally, you need to light the rest of the scene: again, you need to keep that key light out of the "red zone" above, so directly above the camera might be an option even though it would lead to a relatively low contrast scene. But then if the glasses are the focal point, they'll be striking with the black gloss of the glases and the window pane reflection. The "window pane" (depending on how strong the grid is) will also provide some secondary light to fill in shadows.

Glasses which are curved are really difficult because of the wide area of angles which reflect.

I've decided NOT to '52 next year, but I will be re-committing to the 12 for those who are interested. Hopefully with more time on my hands this year I can do a better job.

I will stick my oar in on the '52's a little though, cos I know you all miss me... :naughty:

It is, however, one of them easy..... but Hard themes :)

Yeah... will be doing that. Have also bought a replacement from Germany so hopefully will have something in time for Christmas. Only downside is my only lens will be a 50mm (so 25mm equivalent in full frame) - could probably do with a 150mm or 180mm (75-90) for portraits... maybe even something a touch longer.

Still, I can't wait to get it now - I've been teased with the delivery of the wrong camera (which doesn't even bloody work!)

I have an idea for Round too... although it will sadly be shot on digital rather than film :(
 
Just a bit of an update from me I have 8 themes to do to bring me up to date, just about caught up with people's threads. This working full time is very time consuming, and now I have my digital photography diploma to study for as well. At least being busy is keeping me out of trouble, and I am learning plenty of things which is good.
 
Working full time IS time consuming to put it mildly for me too Mandy :D

Anyway, I'm up to date with my photo's (ish), I was also hoping to catch up with comments tonight too.... but that will happen in the next couple of evening hopefully... good evening All :wave:
