20 photographs to leave you speechless..... especially number 6.

What a crazy world we live in. Both good and bad.

I saw that on Facebook too...some really moving photos, especially as you say #6 it also kind of goes with my past comments that the content/story will often out weigh the technicalities :)

I loved the bomb disposal one as the inclusion of the sign on the side of the building really gave it more impact that it may have had without it

Very emotional shots indeed, thanks for the link.

Picture 9
"This photo was taken by astronaut Michael Collins, when he took this photo he was the only human, alive or dead, that wasn’t in the frame of this picture"
Takes a bit of understanding. How you can be in the frame when you're dead I don't know, but I get the gist of what they mean.

Yeah, the bomb disposal one has a particular impact for me , esp with all the stupidness that's been going on over here lately.

I love looking at this kind of thing. The Alamy and Guardian Apps are brilliant too.

Carl Sagan provides the most eloquent answer:

"From this distant vantage point, the Earth might not seem of any particular interest. But for us, it's different. Consider again that dot. That's here. That's home. That's us. On it everyone you love, everyone you know, everyone you ever heard of, every human being who ever was, lived out their lives."

What a laugh"20 photos that will leave you speechless".LOL All but about four where any good. The rest all needed far to much explanation. A Photograph is supposed to tell a story not need a five line caption."A man uses the suicide hotline on the golden gate bridge" eh! , a picture of Niel Armstrong in a spacecraft! what utter rubbish.Speechless alright.LOL

No. 6 is just... sick... and personally I wont be suggesting anyone view it.

I can only think of one place an image like that should be viewed - in court during a trial and other than that I personally don't think it should be reproduced, viewed or shared.

This pickled my brain.....
Michael Collins, when he took this photo he was the only human, alive or dead, that wasn’t in the frame of this picture.

Well even if you've died, your body sill exists even if your talking down to the atomic form in the case of ash/carbon from cremation :)

Indeed - quite a feather in his photography cap - not that he needs many more feathers.

no.4 hits home for me. I think people forget that the troubles still have a large impact on our country and even at my age, I've seen placed blocked off and bomb squads sent in. Its still a current thing. I did notice the sign, and that makes it more impactful I'd say. For background on that picture: "The Long Walk" – a British Army Technical Officer approaches a suspect device at the junction of Manor Street and Oldpark Road in Belfast, Northern Ireland. The quotation on the sign on the building to the left is from the Old Testament (Amos 4:12).

they are hauntingly evocative shots, some horrific…some inspirational…but all incredible

I do love these compiled, out of the ordinary images whenever someone decides to make a list. But I wish they'd stop adding in images of Neil Armstrong, or anything to do with that moon landing ... booooring, years ago.

I prefer to see something actually amazing or engaging.

#6, and #10 - such contrast. Such elation and such anguish. You have to wonder if that guy ever got over that accident?

sorry not being funny.. you think they are all incredible pictures? lets take away the stories that have been written to go wiht them... just as a picture.. what do you find incredible aboutthe first one? man sat on bench.. you can even see car park at top back... without the story.. how is it an incredible picture? same goes for a few others..

theres some good pics in there.. but apart from a pic on mars? I really dont see whats incredible about any of them...add the stories and yes....but purely as pictures?

Just purely as photos alone, without the stories, the Bomb disposal guy in NI is almost humorous, with that sign to the left! And it makes for a good image. You don't know whether to find it amusing or intriguing.

Yeah, none of the others really would grab you without further information.

The man holding the piece of bread over the starving is still pretty intense without knowing the back story though too.

No. 4 - Oldpark Rd, Belfast. Doesn't look anything like that now. But it's a scene I witnessed many a time.

You're obviously seeing something I'm not

Have to laugh at people always saying stuff like, "a picture should stand up without a caption or explanation". Probably the same people who say the same about photography as art, or indeed about any art. "But it's rubbish, it doesn't look like that to me until you explained it to me".

Take away the meaning, and things don't mean much. You don't say.

What's so bad about needing captions to fully understand the pictures? Many things in art need to be put into context to be understood, what's different here?

excuse me? where have i put that its bad? how have you come to that conclusion... poster says the pictures PICTURES are incredible.. so I say the pics without the captions are not incredible pictures.. man sat on bench is not an incredible PICTURE..

How do you read that I am saying adding captions is bad? ..theres plenty on TP to argue about if you look around without twisting and making things up :(

for clarity.. i believe in captions and use them regularly....i have never said or even hinted captions are bad.. i was answering and quoted a comment saying the PICTURES are incredible...

Your general tone hardly made it sound like you were being positive about it! My apologies if I misunderstood you but it was a fairly easy assumption to make based on your wording.

oh for crying out loud :(

I've just re-read this whole thread to see if my initial reply to you was so out of order and I honestly don't believe it was. If I misunderstood your words then I apologise but you could simply have said 'I didn't actually mean it like that' and clarified what you did mean, there was no need to get quite so defensive.

I think pictures from the first moon landing are both amazing and engaging. Having seen the images before doesn't diminish them in my eyes nor make them any less compelling, but that's just me. :)

Fair enough, but for me personally, I've seen enough of them! It's like England still going on about that 66 WC .... sigh ... :P

i meant with the explanations as a whole…..i didn't actually say incredible pictures..that was you

and your tone isn't very friendly imo..

The set really moved me too and also made me think about a whole load of issues. Agree that some needed the captions more than others and they may not all be the most 'technically perfect' pictures but I found them all very powerful. Also find it interesting that they stir up strong feelings in people's responses!
