Hi guys, I posted this recently in the Canon 5dmkIII thread but thought I'd share it here too for some feedback or crit from the Video forum readers.

It's my first ever attempt at using my dslr for filming but I have to say I really enjoyed it! Focusing was tricky at wide open apertures but worth it for the blurry backgrounds. I tried to keep the camera steady by having the strap tight around the back of my neck with it stretched fully forward - seemed to work reasonably well but not all the time!

Definitely going to do more filming in the future, think I've caught the bug

All shot on the 5dmkIII using either Canon 24-105, or Siggy 85 1.4, and edited in iMovie.

Any tips on how to get better, steadier shots will be much appreciated, and I thank anyone in advance for taking the time to look....

Aaaah, some great little moments there... especially at 1:04 :)

Were you using manual focus? If not then I would.

On the whole I thought it was lovely, there were a few dark clips that could have done with a bit of video light help but hey.

Very nice video, made me smile! This is something I will definitely want to do when it comes to the time of me having kids!

Well done with the focussing, most of it seemed in focus to me while keeping the background nice and soft! With regards to keeping it more stable you could try using software, such as the warp stabiliser in Premiere but its best to keep it stable in the first place really!

Might be worth looking into a monopod as it'd be easy to setup and move around more so than a tripod. Would make it a lot easier to get steadier shots than handheld.

Cheers Andrew! Yep used manual focus throughout - little bit tricky but I'll persevere with it. I know what you mean about the dark clips, I should have tried to lighten them really. Worth remembering for next time! :)

Thanks Ben, monopod is a great idea! I'll have to get one this weekend ;)

I tried to use the 85mm quite wide open as much as possible for the blurred backgrounds, it really does look great on the screen even if it is a bit trickier to do, but totally worth it.

Cheers guys, appreciate the feedback!

It's videos like this that inspire me to get my 5D out and use it for one of the main reasons I got it for....videoing the kids !!!

Great movie made even better the fact it was your first attempt, well done :)

Cheers Ruffy, appreciate it!

I am quite pleased with it, can't wait to have another go soon.

Have a go!

I tried to make sure I filmed a good 10-15 mins once or twice a week for a few weeks until I had enough clips on the computer to sift through and pick out the parts I wanted ;)

Thank's for posting this Phil. I've now had 5 weeks of my mum in hospital, only to be told today that we should prepare ourselves.
Your video and your beautiful daughter made me smile for the first time in 5 weeks.

Thank you again.
Kev.
