Thanks andy.........

The tammy looks sharper on my laptop - less hazing on the white lettering...

Very little difference though - meaning the IS of the first may be a worthy compromise?

The IS was off as both shots were tripod mounted....

Fair enough!

Which do you think is sharper?

Really not much difference at all.
Might be my tired eyes, but the canon normal shot looks sharper, but the tamron crop looks sharper out of the crops.. I will assess again in the morning :p.

and thanks for everyone's opinions......

They are both crops from the centre where you would expect them to be sharpest. Try pictures of e.g. trees against the sky to check for CA fringing, and also a different subject to check edge/corner sharpness. Try ro get a straight line at the edge to check for distortion at wide angle too.

Imagine's post sounds sensible to me.

You may also want to compare a shot with each lens wide open as maybe one's better than the other at that setting?

the contrast on the canon looks better

That doesn't tell much. What aperture was it shot at? At some point they will be rather similar, but there may be more difference at other settings. How much sharpening was applied to each image?

Also you only compare the centre, with non-demanding subject it is hardly a fair test. Get some proper charts, or shoot some highly detailed landscapes, and compare all major parts of the frame.

so the centres are very similarly good, but there is a lot of difference elsewhere (and also f/2.8 vs IS).

They were both shot at f8, 35mm iso 100, no sharpening applied straight out of camera.............

Sharpness is not much different between the two but the colour and contrast both look better on the Canon to me!

Do you use Canon DPP - that will have been configured to cater for the Canon lens' foibles too...?

Not much in it, to be honest.

Im more concerned that you drink Carlsberg :gag::gag: :cuckoo: lol

That really favours the Canon lens. At f/5.6 or f/4 in the midframe it should look a bit different.

stella :gag::gag::gag::gag::gag:, im a budwieser man if im honest, these are leftovers from the xmas holidays.........:D

After having the two photos on two monitors next to each other i recon the Canon is slightly clearer than the tamron, and for some reason the writing is slightly whiter :S

I'd say both very similar, but the canon has the edge ever so slightly
