1x.com... What do you get out of it?

I've been on 1x.com for a while but I'm thinking of deleting my account. If you're on it, what do you get out of it? Other than a warm fuzzy feeling when an image gets selected?

It seems to have a very narrow audience.

Why would you delete your account? If you're a free member, (as I am) it's erm, free. What I get out of 1x is a portfolio gallery of curated images rather than say flicker or 500px where any random shot can be posted and shared. Having looked at your page on 1x it shows a range of superb quality images that look really good and cohesive. Why lose that? That's probably due in no small part to the shots being curated and suiting 1x's gallery style. But I notice you don't keep any non-published images? That's a shame because non-curated images are often just as stunning. If you want to promote yourself, then all you need to do is to direct your clients to this page alone. Apart from that, I also get paid from image sales and occasionally a warm fuzzy feeling when something gets published!

Having said all that, if you want lots of 'likes' and a broad social media experience, then 1x certainly isn't for you. There's hardly any of that, and if you don't get an image published, then it's invisible. (Unless you direct people to your unpublished folio) A lot of people get frustrated at this and quickly leave in a huff. Published shots however do get a lot of views. But of course, only around 5% of shots submitted get published. That does mean their front page is usually of a very high standard and not filled with pictures of piano playing cats. So it's a double edged sword.

I was thinking about deleting it as part of trying to be a bit more coherent and organised about my social media - especially as I update my website and gradually transition it from being a simple showcase of my stuff to being a bit more sales-focused. The fewer platforms I need to maintain the simpler!

How often do you make sales?

Ok, and if you're being more sales focused, then you might prefer it all in-house then. But I don't think it hurts keeping your presence on 1x. You can direct people to your website from there, too. As to sales, fairly regularly, but I won't be retiring on the proceeds shall we say, as my work isn't very 'commercially appealing' Must do more cat pictures I think.
