1TB ext HDD

I've used Western Digital HDs for the past 7yrs and never had a glitch..

I'm a fan of the LaCie drives, not the cheapest, but backups aren't really an area where you want to be scrimping.

I've used all types of HDs and never really had problems with them.

The only problem I've got at the moment is with those stupid SATA data leads which never seem to lock in properly.

They seem to stay in well enough, you're not supposed to spin the drive round on the end of it

I read somewhere that Seagate have gone from one of the best brands to one of the worst. Seagate and Maxtor are the same company now I think.

Recently I've been buying Samsung hard drives. So far so good.

I dont think LaCie make drives (unless they've got a convoluted corporate link to a drive maker), they just package them. The set of 500GB LaCie externals I bought a couple of years ago were samsung drives, but I think they use other makes too

Me too, its all I'm buying recently. I have them in my Mac Pro, Mac Mini and the server.

They don't but the quality of the cooling, shock resistance and power supply all contribute towards the longevity of the drive.

there are sata leads with locking ends available
bought my last ones from scan

My current external hard drive is a 500gb Buffalo one. Very good and reliable. I'm thinking of getting a 1tb Buffalo as I've seen so pleased with my existing one and I can see me running out of space on it in few months time.

I have a western digital mybook 1TB, it works on ethernet and can be accessed from anywhere via mionet, when at home it is very fast but when remotely accessing it is only as fast your internet connection. It is plugged into a router in the roof of my garage and I have not touched it for the past three years, always switched on and has never failed!

My last external hd was a wd mybook and it went belly up after only a few months.

Mybook Worlds are amazing.

However Mybook Home (black) and Pro (aluminium) are terrible. I have used numerous and they will all fail within a few months.

Stay well away.

I have a white one and I said above it is great, I can access from anywhere in the world, I have a relative in the USA and if an image is too big to email he just logs on and drags it to his computer and vice versa.

yes and no. seagate purchased maxtor a good few years back to get hold of some patents and kept maxtor on as a budget side brand. personally ive had no issues with seagate drives compared to maxtor.

agreed, the F1's are supurb. but unless youre buying empty enclosures i dont think any external drive uses them.

ref. LaCie

errrrrr . . . that's why mine overheat then? none failed yet but I've retired them as windows drives because of the silly temps they hit (ouch), and had to give up with them as Linux drives as they kept dropping USB comms

I doubt there would be any need, the F2 & 3 are quicker than USB2 and FW800 anyway. Unless you are using eSATA. I do like the Samsungs and have not had any failures.

Which models? I have been using the BIG DRIVE I think. Aluminium RAID dual drive RAID box. Runs cool and quiet for me.

.. and don't forget to back up your backup!

to be honest id never compared the speeds but youre probably right :)

reminds me i need to get another couple F1's for my HTPC.

Have you tried Aria? They had the 1.5Tb for 54.95+vat !

i havent no, last F1's i bought were the 1TB from scan a few months back for a little less. thanks for the heads up :)

Aria are always about a fiver cheaper than Scan for Samsung drives, they often have them or their SUPERSAVER deals. Scan is nearer though so unless I'm buying a few I still end up at Scan.

likewise, ive got 2x i leave at work as archives and 1x at home with my laptop copies.

My backup is an external Lacie RAID array + NAS (with RAID) + Photos on the Macbook pro and Mac pro. Then two ext drives which I backup to every couple of weeks or so and then swap with the one I have at work then bring that home.

oooooh... show off :P

ive just got 2 desktop drives at work that sync up via allway sync and then just have an extra sync rule for my mobile drive when its plugged in.. then the same at home.

I don't think thats over the top I just have 2 computers I use the MBP and MP which sync their pictures. I have a dual Xeon proliant with a couple of F1 drives in it running freeNAS and a LACIE. The other two drives are just cheap ext boxes with 320Gb drives in. Not an expensive setup at all. The proliant was bought on here for just over a £100.

So if the Samsungs are meant to be that good, how easy is it and cost effective is it to make one using an external enclosure. Also Cowaski, have you ever swapped a drive on an IMac? If so where are you based? As I am not sure I trust myself.

The iMac is not that difficult but "how difficult" depends on exactly which model of iMac you have. I would be more than happy to swap the drive for you but I live up near Preston j29 of M6 so rather out of your way. There are loads of really good enclosures that you can buy in order to install your own drives and then you could install Samsungs. It depends on exactly what you want. I was looking at a 3 drive RAID enclosure. Install 3 x 1.5Tb Samsung F2 drives and it would give you 3Tb of storage which would be quick for reading and if any of the three drives failed you would simply remove the drive, replace it and it would replace the data.

Am looking at a cheapish solution at the moment, possibly looking to go further once funds allow. Probably just a simple enclosure to pop drive in and use as external for now I think, and then look at more advanced options into new year when funds allow.

Cowaski, if you don't mind will pm you details of exact model and maybe you could give me a cpl pointers?

I'm not sure what drives are inside, I understood it that the OP was looking for an external drive package ie needing FW, rather than just the drive inside, but that's where the thread seems to have gone.
