Nice

It's begging for a splash of fill-in flash though - unless you wanted the silhouette effect. I'm guessing that maybe the camera chose the exposure settings for you, in an auto-mode? In which case, there's some good learning to be had, knowing why the camera did what it did, and what other options there were. Such as fill-in flash, which is one of the (few) things the camera's pop-up flash is actually pretty good at, and fairly easy once you've got the knowledge and had a bit of practise.

That's the key to it - learning, practise, asking questions, shoot some more, and then more again, ask questions, learn - you get the idea. Welcome to TP :)

Nice I really like this, silhouette works well with the bit of rim lighting on the dog. As Hoppy says you could've used flash to light the dog but I like it as is, or maybe have silhouetted the dog even more so no facial features can be seen. I might have framed it so the dog wasn't central though, I think the rule of thirds would work well with this shot, but that's just preference. Good effort :)

Well it's not a case of "just" using flash, getting flash right can be tricky ;) Pop up flashes aren't great as light is quite harsh from them, and depending on how far your dog was away in that shot they might not have the power. Using a 'proper' flash/speedlight is better, better still is a speedlight that has been diffused, and even better still is an off camera diffused speedlight that is coming in at an angle from the side to help prevent the 'rabbit in the headlight look'. Obviously it gets quite complicated quite quickly so I would at first just use the pop up (or speedlight on the camera if you have one) and use TTL and see how you get on. As you get more experienced you can experiment with diffusing the light, using the flash off camera and using the flash in manual.

Maybe. Give it a go, you might be lucky, but fill-in flash is quite hard for the camera to regulate (there are two separate exposures going on) and also there can be quite a wide range of settings that may or may not best suit the subject. Suck it and see.

As a rule with fill-in flash, less flash exposure is best. Looks more natural, which is handy because the on-board hasn't got much power. Best method on Canons is to use Av, then use the flash compensation to adjust flash brightness (changes power), and normal exposure compensation to adjust the ambient brightness (changes shutter speed). You then have individual control of both exposures.
