Is thermal paste absolutely necessary on a cpu? I'm building a cheap comp and using a celerion G530 on a MS1 H61M-P22 MB. Didn't know about thermal paste and now its 5pm BUMMER. do I really need this stuff on a crapo build like this.

Yes you do. Where in Kent are you? I have a new tube of thermal paste sitting in my garage!
Or, if you have a PC World nearby, I think they sell the stuff

Actually I just checked a video and the intel heatsink that comes with this cpu has that paste crap allready on it so hopefully I'm okay.:)

I normally remove that stuff as it isn't very good. a tube of good paste costs about a fiver and will last you a very long time. Arctic Silver Ceramique is quite decent .
