Hi all,

This is my first post apart the the 'hello' post.

I wondered if you can help. I have a Nikon D40 at the moment with a Nikon DX AF-S NIKKOR 18-55mm lens.

It takes fantastic quality pictures but I would like to be able to take closer zoomed photos.
What would be the best lens to go for?
I'm currently looking on ebay at a 2nd hand AF NIKKOR 70-300mm lens.
Would that be suitable?

We soon go to Florida on holiday and would love to have some knowledge of my camera before we go.

I will soon be picking your brains for how to get the best firework photos too.

Thanks in advance for your help

Colin

Hello :)

Only AFS designated Nikon lenses will autofocus on your camera so unless the lens you're looking at is the AFS 70-300 VR then it's not the one you want.

The best lens to compliment what you have is the AFS 55-200 VR which is a cracking lens and much better than the cheaper 70-300 lenses in the same price range.

Thanks for the prompt and very helpful reply

I'll have a look for one

I've just upgraded from a D60 and have the 55-200; it is good, but if I'd had more moeny I would 'vr been better with the 70-300mm tbh.

I think the most important for me is that it has auto focus as i'm new.
I just presumed all lenses would be if attached to the right camera.

Thing is, the 70-300 is around £300 second hand, you can pick up the 55-200 for around £120 brand new. The image quality isn't that different so you have to ask yourself if the extra 100mm is worth it. I guess you could look at the new 55-300 which is supposed to be pretty good but the image quality won't be any better than the 55-200.

I have both lenses and think the D40/60 with 18-55 and 55-200 make a great all round kit, especially for travel (the 70-300 is a beast compared to the 55-200 and not so good for tramping around Peru with).

Or you could trade in your 18-55 for an 18-200. Save changing lenses every 5 minutes.

Are you in or near London? The camera exchange on Strand usually has a good selection of second hand lenses.

I think to have a 18-200 would be a more cost effective solution.
I never really though about size for lugging it around. Running around the parks in Florida in the heat with 3 kids is hard work enough without the lens to worry about too.

It maybe a good idea to trade in the 18-55.

I live in North Wales so a trip to the strand is a bit awkward, but there must be something this way.....

Thanks for the suggestions

had a D40 now a D5000

to be frank - for a traveling holiday with kids......

I'd KEEP the 18-55 it's light and small for walking about

buy a 55-200 AF-S VR @£130 ?.............the 70-300 is BIG

buy a 35mm AF-S DX f1.8 for low light shots [indoors?] about £169 new

D40 needs AF-S lenses
for the trip of a lifetime I would not buy used lens - just to be sure
