1st impressions of my new 50d

Hi all,

just upgraded from a 350d to a 50d... my first impressions are :love::love::love: couldn't beleive the size difference. the screen shows amazing detail. tried it with my sigma 17-70mm. no special lighting or setup and the images look very sharp although they haven't been downloaded to the pc yet. the flash seems much better than that on the 350d.

I have a falconry day booked at the end of the month, so looking forward to giving a good test....

AFAIK, both the built-in flashes are the same (Gn 13)....most other things are an improvement though.

All these people upgrading to 50D's are making me jealous.
Can you please stop buying them :D
Seriously though, since I have held one there is no doubt I'll be getting one later this year.
I'd get one now but I think her indoors would only accept the idea once I've had years use out of my 450D.
 
is the screen a higher resolution?
I have seen some of the nice nikon cameras and the screens always look very sharp and the colours look great.

I'd like to see some of the straight from camera results the sigma 17-70 gives you if you wouldnt mind.
Better yet if you still have the 400D shoot the same pic with the same settings and show us to compare
 
Yep its a cracking camera alright, i jumped from a 400d to a 50 and was really quite amazed. But its now made me wonder what it would be like to have a 5d2!

The LCD on the 50D is apparently the same as used in the 5D Mark II. Massive improvement on the 40D which I also have :thumbs: Gorgeous accurate, vibrant colours and sharp detail!

I had a 350d not the 400d. but I'll have try and get something done tonight... i can defo post a pic of the 17-70mm attached to the 50d tonight, just have to download it from the camera...

i went from a 400D to the 50D and was amazed even the images came out sharper than the 400D

Its a joy to use. I have it with the 17-70 and think its brilliant! the extra features are worth the upgrade in my opinion
 
I shop tested the 50D at the same time as a 5D MkII and a Sony A900. Going into the shop I expected the 50D to be the least appealing of the three, but, when considering the cost compared to the other two, found it to be the best buy. When used with quality lenses I have seen some excellent results.

I wondered about this too. I can understand it appearing sharper at high ISOs due to controlling the noise better, but at the normal lower levels of 100/200. :shrug:

Think of it like this...
If the sensor was only 360 x 240 pixels then image would look highly pixelated. Double the number and the image would look better but still pixelated. Simply keep going up the scale and adding rows and columns of pixels and the image becomes clearer (and sharper).
The 50D has 22% more pixels in each direction than the 400D and can therefore capture finer detail assuming that the lens has the resolving power to project it onto the sensor.
