Hi guys I have my first game pencilled in for the agency I am shooting for but I need help with the FTP thingy :D

I have been sent the host name, user name and password but what do I do with these? where do I enter them?

Do I need to download an FTP client or something and if so which ones do you recommend :)

Cheers

Phil

Mac isn't it?

Try Cyberduck (freeware) which is what I use or I know plenty of guys who use Transmit (payware).

PM me some info on where/who/when mate!

Transmit works nicely Phil, easy to use

If you you photoMechanic, the renaming and ftp functionality is very nice! I use that rather than dragging and dropping into other apps. Just find it easier pitch side

Sorry, general question. What is FTP?

File Transfer Protocol, allows you to upload files to a server.

Thanks for the info.

Hi guys

I've downloaded Fetch for my FTP Client and have got it all set up with a shortcut containing my username and password etc.

Now the question I have is when exporting images from Lightroom do you rename your files or do you just put them in a folder named after the game you're shooting then dump the folder in the FTP Client?

Cheers

Phil

if you are senting to the agency for them to send out you need to ask them if you need a prefix and game name eg pcpix_1_liverpool_v_everton
what game are you down to do somebody may also be coving it and could help on site so to speck as every body will have a diffrent method

I'm pretty new to this too so this is from my limited experience:
The agencies I've sent to have provided detailed specifications of how they want the pictures, including minimum dimensions, compression level, colour profile, etc. To FTP, I have an individual login and I create a folder with the name of the event, eg "Davis Cup Tennis GB v Lux day 2". Filenames don't seem to matter, I think they all get changed anyway, it's the EXIF data that they worry about.

I would put the question to the agency as no doubt they're all different.

Phil, get a back up email address to send to as well, it's very, very rare but an FTP server can go down while the email server for the same client can still be "live" so to speak

happened twice to me, once when sending to North West Star and once when sending to Wigan papers, they actually changed their login details and forgot to resend new details to freelancers, luckily I had email a dresses to send into.

Best to have all bases covered in your early stages.

Phil, did you know that you can get an FTP plugin to send directly from Lightroom?

It's on the Adobe site.

Cheers Gary that's a very good idea. I'll get that sorted thanks :-)

...this week Im going to be a 747 airline pilot - United Airlines have told me to take off from Heathrow at 0900h

bye 4 now, i need to go on to talk airlines dot com

And why come on here only to slag people off then disappear for months at a time without contributing

My job is on Saturday and I am asking advice in advance. Seriously what is wrong with that?

I now have my text replacements sorted. I have my IPTC saved as a metadata file in LR which gets applied to each image on import.

I have an export to email preset set up incase I have any connection issues with the FTP.

I have my laptop ready to go via Three 3G dongle

I have fetch FTP set up with passwords etc saved in my keychain.

I have tested everything today and even sent a trial run image over the FTP and it all works.

So tell me in what way am I not prepared for this job!!! :naughty:

all soccersnapper is trying to say is may be you should have tried it out on a live non-critical game first because if it all t*ts up you could have fallen at the first fence, but hope it does not as pix [from what ive seen are good enough]

I see where he is coming from. But the Agency know this will be my first time wiring live and are fine with that.

I just don't see the harm in asking advice on certain things thats all.

In fact I shot a wedding for the first time the other week with no previous experience and produced a decent set of images. So If I can cope with that pressure I'm sure i'll cope on Saturday

just answer this... why undertake a job and then back track and panic and go on internet forums asking how to things

Why hand out advice on equestrian photography when you don't know what you are talking about?

Roughly the same sort of thing really.

I've just figured out what that scar on your forehead is.

Be constructive or be gone.

Scar?

I'm trying to educate the fact that 65% of being a photographer is about application and communication

Those who bluff or assume crash and die

And why assume that I do not help? I quickly fend off the bluffers n when I don't notice, others are only too keen to mock those setting up websites claiming to have attended major sporting events. If people are willing to invest £10k in kit then why shouldn't they invest in education from the masters who see a dying industry falling beneath their feet? After all I'm sure if u got a microlight u just may pay for lessons..

But those who do things the right way always get my help

So what's this scar business???

Matt, why do you always feel the need to try belittle someone who is simply asking for advice, you seem to think that because you have covered the big games and work with the big hitters that it gives you a god given right to crawl so far up your own arse that it hurts, get over yourself.

As for the scar, think out of the box, you're supposed to be good at that.

Me personally, I just wish you would be a little less of an ******** and self righteous prick.

You have got me so wrong

My favourite 9 months was covering welsh premier league football - no stewards, complete freedom and a thoroughly enjoyable experience. I don't care about four world cup finals my passion is for lower league football or the obscure.

There is no new talent out there, everyone tried to emulate getty images blissfully unaware most of those guys grew up shooting full frame slide film.

If Simon cowell hears someone sing out of tune then he tells it as it is.

By all means enjoy photography n snap away at sport but when u make the grade up HR goes out of the window. You cab not read books u only learn by making mistakes n being slaughtered for it. I can assure you there are plenty worse than me.

Does this refer to me then?

I spent a year shooting Farsley and with the help of people on on here I have managed to land a role with a small agency.

Yes I have much to improve on but this will only come with time. The way I see it I could carry on at Farsley for 5 years not getting paid but getting to an excellent standard.

or

I can bit the bullet and jump into the deep end with the agency. They think my photos are good enough otherwise I wouldn't have been taken on. Now all I need are a few games under my belt and i'm sure the wiring will be second nature as I am very computer literate.

I am under no illusions that the first year will see very little financial reward but the experience shooting pro level games will be priceless and i'm sure my portfolio will improve as a result :)

The person on here was WRONG to ask advice on here. He should of asked his agency for help. No beliting just telling it like it is. The fact I had two txts, three Facebook messages n a call about this thread just shows there are others who feel the same and hang their head.

Gary when I don't understand something I ASK -

So explain the scar as I'm none the wiser

And to me any many others that snidey comment sums you up Matt, you pretend to offer advice and support but on the other hand you always have to include a veiled comment about your superiority and others supposed inferiority in your small mind.

Oh, and the comment regarding the scar on your forehead, ask someone in the real world not Mattt Ashtons world.

Exactly what the OP did so why all the crap:dummy:

crap? understand the qualities required in a persons character to when hiring photographers and you will change your tune, when you are working for someone its always advisable to ask at source to whom the client is what they want as often advice given by third parties is often wrong and may not relate to the individual companies requirements

for three people who have sent me txts today regarding this and indeed myself, would you kindly care to explain the scar reference as there are now four of us who have no idea to what you are referring to as we would like to share your understanding and opinions. I sincerely thank you in great anticipation.

Re read the thread Matt and you will see that Phils agency are fully aware this is his first time wiring live and are happy with that.

I seriously don't believe there are 4 of you who don't know about the forehead scar comment, you being a northern lad as well.

I'll let it eat at you a while more.

here is some advice... nice view point though use roman thirds

the picture is the sky = why the wasted space at the foreground? - thus make the horizon the bottom third and not have the horizon go through the middle of the frame

Go to London and look at the master painters in the many art galleries study Art History. Every great image has great composition.

Instead of getting players wondering around WAIT and wait for the moment when there is action in between the posts as it will be a far better image. If you like the grass then get lower and make the horizon at the top of the frame. If you dont know what roman thirds are then imagine a naughts and crosses board. You can get focussing screens with these on to aid you with composition. What makes a picture? Subliminal space and of course backgrounds.

If you are working for IPC magazines they have a different way of using FTP and use various ports to stop spam images from appearing on their desks. Therefore Id suggest chatting to any picture editor or IT dept and gaining valuable knowledge from the people you are working for rather than innocently asking on here.

Its best to feel a fool and get the information you need from source rather than be a fool for not doing research and assumption otherwise you will crash and burn. I have corresponded with Phil and he totally understand the point of view I have given.

One of the guys just got made redundant from the Daily Record, so he is very northern. He has no idea either so care to share your wisdom?

here is more advice

http://gcsports.zenfolio.com/p614934242

pic 54 works as you have used the background to your advantage, however although nice timing, pics 2, 3, 4 etc are let down by your positioning. A yard to the left would have cut out the distracting side screen resulting in a cleaner and better image

Thanks Matt but I didn't ask for or want your advice, it will go in the bin, however just for your ill-informed self, a yard further to the left In the cricket photos 2 3 and 4 would have had me sat in the lap of another 2 photographers so please refrain from commenting about the shooting situation when you weren't there so have no idea.

For the benefit of those who like tips and help I shall continue to push your boundaries and make you aware on the skills of achieving better cricket images.

Beat the competition and get there early ...that's why the cricket boys get to grounds at 7am, get their position and depart to get breakfast.

If i was a picture editor I would reject those particular images because of the poor backgrounds - especially if better pictures are coming in. Picture Editors are hard enough to please without giving them fuel for rejection. Strive for excellence always. If the other photographers knew of the excellent background, there is no need to sit in their laps, just simply sit behind and shoot in between them.

Now, care to explain the scar remark or for yet another time will you avoid the question?
