went to a non-league game at the weekend, Gresley Rovers vs Loughbrough Dynamo and took some pics, anyway i sent some off to the local free paper.

I didnt get paid and i know i am taking jobs off the professional photographers, but this way i plan on letting them have the next lot for free then say to them if they like what they see then i will start to charge. Its basically like a foot in the door.

I wouldn't worry too much about the "taking from the mouths of professionals" arguement. It's unlikely the local free paper would have paid a pro to cover the match, so you are filling a gap if anything.

Besides, who says newspaper images should be the preserve of professionals anyway?

nice one! and like simmotino said, your not taking from the pros. they obviously werent there. earlier this year there was a severe storm with lots of flooding and trees down etc, i shot loads and send them to the county times and they published them.

its all about right place at the right time mate!!

Nice to see that you got a credit for the pics as well, all too often local rags don't have the common courtesy to acknowledge who has filled their column inches for them.
