Hi, I'm looking to move up from the inbuilt flash on my a350 and was looking for a bit of advice. I use my camera mainly for family snaps so portraits really.

Can anyone recommend me what I should be looking at getting? Prices and names of shops would be a great help too.

Thanks

I've got the Jessops one and its not let me down - nice piece for its price

Great thanks for the advice. What about add ons like reflectors diffusers stands etc what would you recommend I need to start off with? Also know of any good how to books on using flash photography?

i'm pretty sure its a standard fit on the flash side of things - course with sony's they have their own hotshoe fitting compared to the canikon boys.

there's a thread further on where its been recommended whats a good set to start off with.

If this is your first go at this and you're planning to use your flashgun then I'd suggest the following as a starter kit...

Set of RF602 triggers (Ebay)
Konig Lightstand (7dayshop)
Umbrella adaptor (Ebay)
Shoot through umbrella (Ebay)

You should be able to pick that lot up for under 50 quid, perhaps less for used gear from the TP classifieds. There's no point in buying softboxes or any other "fancy" gear until you grasp the basics and the kit listed above should be enough to give you a good grounding that you can build on as and when you need to.

Thanks for that

One more question are there any problems with buying flashguns 2nd hand? For instance are they like a household bulb with a limited life? Sorry if that sounds dumb

I've seen a 2nd hand jessops one on eBay for £40

they're not household bulbs but there's no issue in buying 2nd hand. mine isnt and it works fantastic.

as long as u be careful and buy through a viable source covering ** own back then you shouldnt have anything to worry about
