Just bought a canon AE1 on here which looks in near mint condition. How is this camera rated today, anyone using it with any tips?. I have loads of digital kit
It has a 28mmF2.8 plus a 50mm f1.8 coming with it and a flash, plus i have a 135mm f3.5 plus a 2x converter.
I'm quite exited about this:beer:

Hi Steve, welcome to the exciting world of the past...or is it the future? o_O :D Anyway, I don't have anything of a Canon persuasion but I believe the AE1 was (and still is) highly thought of and someone will be along in a minute (I believe they are having a nap at the moment) to give you the lowdown. It's a slippery slope your on mate, first an AE1, then onto medium format and eventually the madness that is large format where you will join the bemused and slightly eccentric group of photographers who think it is ok to carry nearly 3 tons of equipment all day and take 4 shots a year....:runaway:

Nice camera from the reviews I've read online - im hoping to get an AE-1 from a friend in the next couple of weeks

Hi Andy, slippery slope indeed mate. Within two weeks of discovering legacy lenses i had bought over a dozen, got some lovely FD stuff and bought a Lens Doctor adapter, did all the usual learning curve stuff using them on the eos system, got dissapointed and ended up selling most of them. Now if only i had spent that 70quid that the adapter cost me on a nice film camera I would still have those lenses. I have loads of M42 and Oly fit stuff that I just found out i can use on the AE1 so I'm feeling quite optomistic.

To be honest I'm fed up with digital stuff, film seems like more honest photography to me and a bloody sight simpler. I read a Ken Rockwell bleat on the AE1 Program, he pretty much said it all for me, I just want to take good pictures not obsess over two thousand settings and post editing software its just boring now.

I dug out our old Olympus 35 RC, lovely looking thing and we have some fantastic pictures of the kids taken with that, that are 20 odd years old. That was a pleasure to use, with a very short learning curve to get great results. I'm still struggling to remember a tenth of what i have learned with a 1000D, 5D and a 50D, makes you feel like a nonce, for what?

I think I'm going to enjoy this:)

Biggest thing with the AE-1 (and brother/sister cameras) is the Canon squeal/squeak, make sure you don't have that. They were unbelievably popular cameras in their era, they sold a huge number of them - and although they are electronic and have a fair amount of circuitry, you don't hear about too many electrical problems.

I liked my AE-1 Program, but the lack of aperture priority forced a sell.

I have an AE-1 and it is by far and away my favourite camera. Such a pleasure to use and the noise it makes when you fire it is fantastic.
As freecom says, providing yours doesn't have the squeak, known as the canon cough, you'll be sorted :)

Congrats..you'll slow down now, no more taking 30 shots of every subject and sitting in front of a computer picking the best shot ;) Mind you I have to admit a digital camera would be handy for machine gunning in capturing subjects like a bee in flight or a drip from a tap.
......and Canon lenses are very good (y)

I have an AE-1 Program and love it. It had/has the canon squeak which is fairly easy to fix (mine coughs once in a while) and I've also replaced the light seals as they were quite gooey. Well worth checking them before you go too far ;)

Thanks guys, I feel reborn! especially with regards our old 35 RC,.

I am now in the market for old film stuff...

HELLLLP.....
