1st DSLR two options

Just been reading this thread from the start, wow, there is some very good and confusing advice. Its great to see so many people chipping in and offering their help and opinions. Well as an ex canon user who moved over to Sony, just because I liked the feel of it, I would concur with that piece of advice, if it feels right, then it is. For what its worth, I really am happy with my Sony and it offers much more in flexibility and functions than I will ever need at my level of photograhy, there is plenty of room to learn and grow into. Good luck with your choice and whatever system you buy into, enjoy it.

I only read some of the first page, but just thought I'd throw in my $0.02. I'll probably repeat what most people have said...

When I started for me it was Canon vs Sony. In the end I chose Canon:

1) I went into Jessops and tried both. I'd advise doing the same.
2) Nikon will probably give you a better future choice if you decide to upgrade. I chose Canon for the same reason.

On another note - Sony will give you a range of cheaper lenses from the Minolta range (eBay time!)

Hope this helps!

Gazbag, thanks for the input, you are correct in the response/advice, it has been really good!

Lareneg, what you won't have seen is that I am now open to Canon, and it is my preferred choice tbh. I have indeed been to Jessops too to check on some of the cameras and how they feel. If I can get a Canon, I will be :)

As those of you that have been following this thread know, I am looking to buy my first DSLR.

I have pretty much narrowed the search down to Canon, in fact I have purchased a lens already so I hope I get a good deal on a camera soon!

I have been looking on here in the for sale section, on various websites, including ebay.

I am slowly getting carried away with myself due to the variations in the prices and had I been able to get a 50d for £500, which I unfortunately missed out on (or fortunately for my bank balance), I would have been impressed I am sure.

Back to the drawing board for the most part as the 50d @ £500 seems a rare bargain.

I have a few queries/options which I wonder if people can advise me on, I will number them for ease of reference.

1) I have just seen a 50d on ebay, which states it is new, and with a Canon warranty, at £600, does this seem too good to be true? The guy does seem to have good feedback. This is the direct link

2) A brand new 500d is available BUT from the US for around £400 - direct link here

What are the views on imports? Are they identical and is it as well to consider the warranty worthless -albeit a new camera?

3) I could just go with a 20d for under £300, though it will of course be an older model

Edit:

4) Just saw this, refurb 450d with just 3 months US warranty (which hopefully I won't need to use), but only £300 http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/CANON-EOS-450D-DIGITALCAMERA-REBEL-XSi-BODY-Only_W0QQitemZ180451664255QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_CamerasPhoto_DigitalCameras_DigitalCameras_JN?hash=item2a03c1e17f#ht_9454wt_1165

What to do?

Any help / advice would be appreciated.

Thanks, J.

Please ignore the above.... I've been a bit daft with the plastic.... I have bought a 40d! Thanks so much for all your help :)

The 40d has arrived, it looks fantastic, I am very excited. The error I made, opened it all up, my CF card has not yet arrived! Gutted!!! I guess I will have to wait now!
