I was wondering if anyone has made the above move? I am thinking about it as all the reviews seem to point in that direction, then someone popped up on another forum to say that the R5’s AF is not as good and the image quality is akin to APSC, nowhere near the 1DX2, which has rather thrown a spanner into the works. I would love to hear from others with experience of both camera. I do mainly wildlife and motor, mostly with 100-400ii and 500f4i.

sounds like the someone do not know what they are talking about.
R5 is one of the best FF sensor made by canon. Its AF is really good too. I'd go with R5 anyday.

I went from 1DX3 to R5.
The image quality from the R5 and RF lenses is light years better than the 1dx3.
No to mention the AF is brilliant on the R5 and no more micro adjusting lenses.

Someone is winding you up with a comparison to crop sensor quality.

R5 is very good. I still have the 1DX2 to have the two high frame rate bodies, however I may switch to 2 R5s.

Thanks everyone, that is all very reassuring- I reckon I will take the plunge.

If the 1DX series is your thing before jumping in it maybe worth waiting to see what the R3 is all about .... it's starting to sound very good indeed.

I have been so close to buying a R5 ... then an A1 ... then a R5 .... then they announce the R3 :banghead:

its going to be more expensive than R5 and also 1DXii now. Last figure I heard was £6K

I have been through the same debate as you but just went with A1.
R3 form factor wouldn't be for me anyway.

Whoops! Too late, I have just pressed the button, but that price is a bit too steep for me anyway.

I'm hoping no more than 6k. Form factor is perfect for me as I always use a grip which is another £400 on the R5. All depends on sensor size really.

Saying all that Sony has the 200-600mm

I'm in no hurry anyway, my present gear does most of what I want ... if i'm honest it's probably mostly GAS from having sold loads recently and not buying anything for a couple of years.

exactly, 200-600mm plus couple others like sigma 85mm/1.4 and sony 35mm f1.4 which are great.

A1 is really the first body I have found that could be use for anything and everything. IMO the first "do-it-all" body. Even if R3 matched it in all respects the size would mean I wouldn't carry it half the time :(
Of course everyone has different needs, these are just mine :)

its a great body, you won't regret it. Would have got it myself if I had lenses like you do.
I already had lenses for Sony so I stuck with them.
