Hi im looking to add a full frame camera to my kit and i'm looking to either get 1dx mk 1 or 5d mk iv i will be using them with a 300mm 2.8 is + extenders , 100-400 ii and 500mm f4 is , i do mainly bird photography at sunrise and sunset , would much appreciate any feedback on this please and what people think would be the better option , and any hands on experience on either camera . thanks

From a purely wildlife/BiF point then the 1dx but the 5dmkIV is probably the better all round camera. The other consideration is the weight, on one hand the lighter 5d will be better when having to carrying any distance but the plus side to the added weight of the 1dx is it balances beautifully with the 500mm f4 on a gimbal.

would the difference in megapixels make much difference

Depends what you do with your images? If you don't need to print any larger than A3 you probably wouldn't notice any difference. Admittedly I don't do much BiF photography as my main subjects are usually mammals so I try and use better fieldcraft to get closer, probably not always possible with BiF.

I used a 5DIV for wildlife and it was absolutely fine including for birds in flight. I’ve just sold it and bought a 1DXII.

Why? One reason only. I liked what the 5DIV produced but I didn’t like how it handled. I used a 1DIIn and then a 1DIV. When I upgraded the 1DIV I couldn’t justify the cost of a 1DXII so went with the 5DIV. The images it produced were superb but I missed shots because I was going for buttons that weren’t there and I just couldn’t settle with it.

So what I’m basically saying is don’t discount how they handle.

The 5D4 is a great camera, especially as an "All Rounder". Great IQ, good AF etc etc. The 1DX is a bit more specialised as it is designed to get the shots! The 1DX is all about getting the shot even if it does not have the ultimate IQ - though it is Very good. My 1DX is a bit of a pixel desert by today's standards but still allows a fair bit of cropping for A3 prints.

I, to, am also, primarily, a bird photographer and use the 1DX + 100-400 Mk2, 300 F2.8 L IS (+ extenders) and the 800 F5.6 L IS and I have yet to try a camera that really stacks up to the 1DX (except the Mk2!) from any manufacturer so far.

Naturally in other types of photography the 5D4 has it's advantages and is a better all round camera, especially on less demanding subjects as far as AF is concerned.

Just my thoughts and observations.
