Wait a minute before you jump the gun ;)

I've got a 40D and I'm looking for a second camera. I do mainly studio work at the minute and I'm looking for a good solid reliable camera.

Spec-wise the 1Ds is perfect for me (FF, 11MP, built in grip and rock-solid workhorse) but how far has technology really gone past it?

The main points I'm concerned about in comparison with my 40D:

  1. Noise performance at medium to high ISO (around 400 to 800)
  2. Autofocus speed
  3. Compatibility with todays larger CF cards (i.e. 8GB)

Looking at the points above, I'm also considering a 1Dmk2. How would this compare on the above points?

Any help and input would be much appreciated.

1) Noise would be an issue at 1600iso, but then 11mp on FF ? even with digic 1, id imagine its ok

2) the mk1 should have better autofocus than the 40D, thats the main point of 1D series, awesome autofocus, well at least on the non s version, still the FF versions should still be very accurate and quick.

3) Buy a few 2gb cards, more reliability as you spread pictures out over them, and also how many thousands of pics do you take in 1 shoot ?! lol

I would be a bit concerned over the usage a 1D would have had. Many were used by Press and sports photographers and may have a good number of miles and shutter actuations under their belts by now.

The 1D mkII offers "newer technology, but again look at the "mileage".

I don't know what your budget is or what price you are looking at for the 1D, however have you thought of a good low millage 5D. Excellent image quality, and now with the mk11 version out you could pick up bargain

Focus next week, maybe a bargain to be had there

I have pretty much all 3 of those at the moment, and will probably be selling the 40D in a week or so (just need to make sure all goes well with the 1 series ones first!)
I have had the 1D MkllN (not Mkll but I doubt there is any difference for your question) for just over a week, and taken it out a few times, the AF is much faster than the 40D and I whacked the ISO up last night to H and there was no major noise - it was for taking pics of small birdie things in trees with a lot of twigs, so I was impressed with that as I actually got birdies that are recognisable and before they had a chance to fly off

The 1Ds Mk1 I have only used for a couple of shots (got it a few days ago) but I will be taking it out either this afternoon or tomorrow for a play. So far AF is faster than the 40D. I stuck a 2gb card in and looked to see how many shots it would take, then stuck an 8gb card in and the number shot up, so it does seem to read the higher volume cards. I am leaving the 8gb one in to see what happens in reality although I do have the 2gb ones in the bag!

how many dif 1d mk11 are there, whats the main diff between them

1ds one too ?? so 3 dif model

Mate
There are 2 1d series Canons, The 1ds and the 1d.
There have been 3 versions of the 1ds released since the original 1ds.
There have been 4 versions of the 1d released since the original 1d.

Unlike the 40d, where it has surpassed the 30d, 20d and 10d, the 1d series are upgraded by versions: 1d, 1dmkII, 1dmkIIn and 1dmkIII : 1ds, 1dsmkII and 1dsmkIII

And a quote about the difference between the 1dmkII and the mkIIn

The primary changes are a new 2.5" wide viewing angle LCD monitor, a weaker AA-filter on the sensor, an improved buffer, new 'Picture Style' image parameters and the ability to write to the SD and CF card formats simultaneously.

And in response to the OP, get a 5d ;)
