Hello all

Just curious to hear your opinions on this, can get a really nice one for a really nice price and was curious as to this would be better than another 5D...

Cheers

It would be different to the 5D. It would have much better AF, metering and weather sealing.
Working against that, the 5D would be lighter, better at high ISOs and have better battery life.

Whilst I've not used them, I'm assuming that there's probably not a massive amount in it for absolute IQ.

You sum it up nicely...except for the part of battery life. The 1D goes forever compared to a 5D.

I was also thinking that the worst enemy of the 1Ds could/should be high ISO performance. With modern software this should be an academic draw-back and taking the AF and all that into account, price etc, I think the 1Ds LOOKS BETTER AND BETTER by the second.

Weight never bothered me, a benefit rather than a problem...

Cheers

Me either, more to drive it .... *cough* best not go there.

I would say if you already have the 5D and are looking for a backup rig then the 1Ds would be a sound [but dangerous] move. It will also retain it's value so if you get sick of it [or want a 1Ds III because you fall in love with the 1 Series] then it will hold it's value.

I say go for it and rejoice in the splendor of the 1D

At current used prices, I would go for abother 5D. The main thing that would get me about the original 1DS is the shooting speed. The buffer is just a bit limited. Also I have never been a fan of the 1 series battery charger (AKA the Brick).

Stop before you rush in.
Sounds like you're thinking about the 1DSmk2, which certainly does have good battery life. The mk1 is a battery hog, just as the 1Dmk1 is.

Good point that I did not know about thanks...

I must admit to be suffering of severe 1D fever since starting to shoot my 1Ds II.

The AF response is just SO good even compared to the 5D and I cannot see myself being happy with anything less.

The 5D does wear a battery off rather quickly though and I should really get a grip for it.

Thanks for the heads-up on the Mk I being a battery hog though:thumbs:

I work with a wedding photog who sold his 1DS(mk1) and replaced it with a 5D plus grip, and he said it's worlds better. The ergonomics of the camera are better, high ISO noise much lower, it's lighter, and the only thing he misses on the 1DS is the integrated grip is better than the BG-E4 for the 5D.

what do you plan to use the camera for - i have one - for some things it's great - for others it's poor

The one you're looking at, Anton, has it the optional viewfinder light? it's a really great option........:exit::beer:

I would like it as a 1D replacement for my 5D but it looks like this is maybe not such a great idea then due to the 5D's superior noise performance??

Maybe hunt for a 2nd 1Ds II?

Paid work is mainly weddings and social functions. I the Mk I's AF response better than the 5D with it being a 1D and all?

Does the 1Ds (Mk I) have the ring of fire?

Ring of fire? What is a ring of fire?

If I understood it correctly, when you roll the horizontal AF point selection wheel you get to a point where the perimeter of AF points all light up.

When you leave it here it will automatically select a small cluster of AF points anywhere in the central area and they rock & roll as fast as you can press the shutter button. They also go where you want them about 9.5 out of ten times...

On non-1-series bodies, they have the equivalent brainpower of a sparrow choosing the right focus point. On 1 series bodies, when you use the ring of fire, you harness the power of Chuck Norris to select a focus point, and focus, before you even know you want to focus.

I have used a 1D MkII for the last 18 months and love it, wanted full frame too so I bought a 1Ds MkI - i was very disappointed. The battery life was crap and the noise even at ISO 400+ was poor. Sold it on and bought a 5D, I've never been happier, it shows how far behind the the 1Ds technology really is thease days.

Dont know about the 1DSMKI but the 1DSMKII blows the 5D away.
The only reason I am selling my 1DSMKII is the file sizes are to big for wedding work. I use the 1DMKIII now and thats great for weddings, but the 1DSMKII is far better then the 5D, and I should know I had 3 and got shut of them all.
£3000 no ofeers 4000 shutter actions or less, mint condition.

How / in what way does the the Mk II blow the 5D away?

The 5D has the better high ISO noise performance of the 2...

Are the Mk III file sizes smaller than the Mk II?

P.S.

I understand what you say about no offers but IMHO 3K is too much for your Mk II. 2-2,5k would be a good price...

Anton, Papa got rid of the 1Ds II to get the 1D III (Not the 1DsIII)

The MkII is only 10mp where the Ds II is 16 or something AND full frame! the 1D II has the 1.3 crop.

Iv got a 5D, but i need a 1D series (For the speed and AF)but dont know wheather to get the 1D MkII N or go for the MkIII what with all its problems on launch!!

Ah:bonk: makes sense then...

Must agree with you for wanting a 1 for AF response...it does kick butt. My 1Ds II is WAY superior to my 5D in this aspect and that is not even a sport camera...can't wait to get me a 1D III. It would like they could possibly have sorted out the worst hassles by now...haven't heard anything bad lately:shrug::shrug:

Yes, for a good price, its still an excellent camera.
