1Ds mark2 or 1D2n for second camera

Hi guys apologies for another 'which gear' thread, but I'd like to know your thoughts on which camera to use as a second camera to my 1D mark III.

Its main use will be on a 70-200 for sports so the obvious choice would be the 1D2n.

But seeing as I already have the 17-40L I was thinking of the 1Ds2 as a full frame alternative to the 1.3 crop on the mark 3. I haven't done much landscape photography lately but can't seem to bring myself to sell the 17-40, and know that if I ever go on holiday this year that'll be the lens I want to take most and i'm not sure if it will be wide enough on a 1.3.

My main concern on the 1Ds2 is the fps, will it be quick enough for sports. Also does anyone know what the noise performance is like on both cameras?

1D2n it has the crop factor and is designed for sports with better high ISO and AF than the 1DS

1DS is designed for studio work so the high ISO is not as good. Im not sure about the argument about being able to crop more but you would certainly need too with the 1DS
 
If you're looking at a purely sports backup camera you can't go wrong with a 1D2N - an amazing bit of kit, even by todays standard. High ISO is nothing to write home about but this camera first came out over 5 years ago...

If you're looking at a second body for day to day, very small amount of sport, why not look at either the 5D or 5DII. You'll find the 5DII, especially on centre spot AF, is more then adequate and has awesome high ISO capability, plus it's FF and allows you to crop, and gives you a lighter weight every day camera for holidays and such.

I had a 5D and sold it to fund the 1D3. I found the AF to be very sluggish and I hear the 5D2 is not much better.

I was only throwing in the 1Ds2 because I thought it would be a good option for landscapes. But the main priority of the second body has to be sports as this is an area I am finally starting to sell images of on my website, and also an area I am wishing to improve on to get a decent portfolio put together.

You say the high ISO is not much to write home about? What do you mean by this? If I had to use ISO3200 for an evening game, am I going to be able to get saleable images at A4-A3 size.

If I got an 1D2n I could sell my 17-40L and buy a wider lens. I hear tokina do a great ultra-widw angle lens, just can't remember which model it was:thinking:
 
Having owned a 1D2n I would say you will not get salable images at IS 3200 printed to A4 or A3 although that depends on how discerning the customer is, but I dare say 7x5 would be ok. It is a great camera though, pretty much on par for IQ and focusing with the 1D3, perhaps even better focusing according to many reviews.

Also, according to any test results I've seen, the 1D2 and 1Ds2 have almost identical ISO results, but of course you have more pixels from the latter so once the image has been reduced, so the noise will be reduced.
 
The MkIIN doesn't have an ISO of 3200, simple as. If you want that quality you need another 1DIII or IV.

The 1DII does have a better AF system than a MkIII, especially with the early problems they suffered, and it's a lot less hit and miss.

I think you'd be surprised by a 5DII on centre focus point when used correctly. I know a few who use them to great effect for motorsport and lowfly photography.

1DsII is a cracking camera. I sold mine only to fund a 1DIV. You have enough pixels to crop and I've got A3 prints at ISO1600 accepted into exhibitions so it can't be all bad. Image quality is sublime.
 
even the IQ off 1Ds original is lovely. 11MP for a 2003 camera must have been quite the breakthrough.

Daugirdas owns a 1Ds Mark II maybe he can comment.

No, but that doesn't alter the fact it's available. In my earlier post I suggested it wouldn't work well.
 
Let me know if you want some high ISO sports shots from a 1D2N, I have some indoor football here.

I have used Lightroom to clean up the noise a bit so let me know if you want to see some untouched ones and I can upload some large jpgs straight off the camera.
 
I have 2 1Ds MkII which are fantastic for Lanscape & work Ok for sport. For the price of a good S/H 1Ds MkII you can buy a new 1D MkIII which is good for Landscape & excellent for sports.

Have you compared with the 1Ds original? i would just like to see how they stack up. I am aware it's an old dog now and by god does the ISO limit (and noise at ISO 1250) bug me a bit but it would be good to see how the old dog fares against the new stuff.
 
I had a 1D IIN and now have a 1DS II. If they are close-ish in price the 1DS is what I would buy every time. The high ISO pixel peeping is about the same and it still does 4fps and up to 32 jpgs in a burst. For me 16mp was a big jump vs 8 and everything else is pretty similar.

What do these look like at A3 size, any good?

Where have you seen a new 1D MkIII for similar price to a used 1Ds MkII?

I've only just remembered about my offer earlier today, so uploaded some untouched shots as they came off the camera. I took two shots at ISO 1000 before deciding I needed to take it up another notch. All the rest were ISO1250 and even then they're quite underexposed. I'll have a go at using Lightroom to clean the noise in the same shots tomorrow evening and upload.

I only took them on Sunday and haven't printed any so :shrug:, but you're more than welcome to download them and try.


p.s. Go over to the Classifieds forum and you'll see a 1D2N for sale, although it's not actually the one I took these shots with, but a second body I'm trying to shift to try and fund a 5D2. ;)
 
That set now also includes edited versions where I've brought up the exposure as much as I dare and applied noise reduction within Lightroom.
