1D2 Slow photo transfer speeds to the PC

I took delivery of a second hand 1D MkII last week, everything seems to be working ok with it, except for two things.

The first is that the transfer of images is woefully slow. For example 600 images took over two and a half hours to upload to the computer.

With the 450d using larger files, this would have taken no more than 20 mins.

For the transfer I'm using "Microsoft scanner and camera wizard" in both cases.

The 1d2 uses a compact flash card Sandisk 4gb Extreme III.

I've tried loading the programme that came with the cameras "Canons zoombrowser", in the hope this will be quicker, but keep getting the message "This camera is not compatible with the programe" or words to that effect.

Some one suggested getting a card reader. Any other suggestions would be most welcome.


The other smaller problem is that I can't switch from the compact flash to the SD card, the 1d2 has both. The only way I can use one or the other is if I only have that one in the camera.
 
What spec computer are you using?

Whilst my computer was almost top spec in its day, it is now 6ish years old and I would estimate that number of photos from my 40D would talk almost as long.

The difference was even more pronounced when I bought a new lap top last year and downloading photos to that probably only take a tenth of the time, if not less.

I must admit I do just download mine via the Windows thing and they would be jpeg rather than raw, but it could well be your computer rather than your camera or software used. Do you have a card reader as that might help?
 
are the files from the 1D noticably larger than the ones from the 450D?

2 suggestions to try and speed the transfer up:

1) open the camera from my computer and drag and drop. i hate that useless poxy wizard thing.
2) get a card reader.
 
I found that fitting an internal USB card reader to my PC transfers the photos a lot quicker than directly from the camera itself.
I use to get a lot of time out errors transfering 4GB of RAW images directly from the camera.
 
Thanks Fitzy and Neil. I've had my computer upgraded recently so the spec is not a problem. I'm downloading JPEG format as well.

Neil as stated in the original post the 450d files are larger than the 1d2 files and they only take one tenth of the time to download, on the same computer using the same Wizard.

I've also tried the drag and drop method, but there was no difference in speed.

I was allready advised to get a card reader, it seems the way to go, but I wanted to know if there were any other suggestions.

Rather than ignore what may be a fault with me or the camera, I thought I'd take the oportunity to see if the problem could be resolved.
 
Got one of these ones HERE a couple of weeks ago, their very quick.
 
Thanks Darren, it does seem like a solution, but I wondered if there was anything I can do with camera to resolve the problem.
 
Thanks Terry, that looks like a good one nice price too, but I was wondering if there is a fault with the camera or my settings that could be resolved.
 
Thanks Neil, I have just ordered this card reader

"Sandisk ImageMate 12 in 1 USB 2.0 Memory card Reader / Writer with Transfer Button" from Amazon, £18 delivered first class.

It will read both the Compact flash and the SD card that the camera uses.



I would still like to know if there is anything I can do to get the camera to operate properly though.

Using the card reader by passes the problem but does'nt solve it.

Is there a possibility I'm using the wrong settings, is the inability to change over cards, and the fact that Canons Zoombrowser refuses to recognise my cameras, connected to the transfer speed problem. If so I would like to be able to resolve this. Any suggestions any one please.
 
To update :) I have now found how to change the card the camera uses to copy the images to.

One problem resolved, that was due to my ineptitude. ;)

I'm sure everything else is too. Any 1d2 users out there that can help me out?
 
are you plugging the camera into the ac adapter ? if not, do so it will help the transfer speed, also, don't use the camera and settings wizard, use the canon software or an equivalent and finally, try a smaller memory card, say 2gb and see if it's different (did you format the card using the 1D)

USB 2.0 is effectively 40 times faster than 1.1 (480Mbps compared to 12Mbps).

You're only resolution is to get a card reader.
 
are you connecting via usb 1 or 2?

is the card a genuine Extreme III - you need to check there are a lot of fakes - even from "good dealers" the other option (although seems unlikely) is that the files on the card are fragmented leading to a slower transfere - you can correct this by formatting the card each time you use it


is your download software rotating the files or adding IPTC info? - if so then understand that both will slow download

i have owned 6x 1d cameras and in all cases a cheap cCF card reader was quicker, the download system from the 450 maybe better designed for faster download, as most people using the 1d will use a card reader. the time that you list seem to suggest a faulty usb or a usb2 running at usb1 speed - which is really slow...

i,ll second that the older camera is usb1, which is v slow whereas usb 2 with a hi speed card will download in minutes not hours. i think using the camera to down load is for working in the field when you may not have access to a card reader. most camera manuals recommend a card reader any way .hth

Ant, I still use my 30D ...alas only as an expensive card reader because it is faster than my 1D! I used to use the firewire, but since upgrading to 64bit Vista I've been unable to as Canon don't seem to want to release drivers for it :( So I would recommend getting a firewire card for your PC...it is lightening quick then :)

I'm pleased to have the answer to the problem, and wont now feel there is some fault lurking within the camera ready to expand at any moment.

So the card reader I've ordered is in fact the only solution as you say.

The 1d2's usb socket isn't actually for transferring files. I think it's for direct printing only.

Canon's Eos Utility only recognises the camera for changing personal settings and transferring photos when it's plugged in by firewire. I've used the firewire or a card reader with mine :)

If you've not done already, it's worth connecting it up to firewire because theres a lot of useful settings that can only be enabled through that in conjunction with eos utility.

The card reader has been delivered today, and what was taking over 2½ hours, now is completed in under 10 minutes, thank gawd :clap:
