Everything works as should be until I press the shutter.. I then get an error. then the shutter works very slowly then it goes into sensor cleaning

Err 99
Shooting is not possible.
Turn the power switch to <OFF> and <ON> again or re-install the battery

Of course that doesnt work.. niether does different card, different lens, cold boot, powered battery..

So its phone the shop i got it from (yes a proper shop in this country phew!) in the morning and probbaly be without for a couple of weeks while the shutter gets replaced.... sigh. 18th july got it.. so thats just a few days over 2 mths... pathetic :(

Welcome to the club ...

It's not the shutter, it's the magnets in the mirror assembly not working properly. Mine's just gone in for the second time with the same fault. Piece of cr*p.

Well, spoke to a guy that is a well known tog for a regional paper at the weekend. His 1st D3 was in 3 times for 'adjustments' and his replacement is going in tomorrow for recalibration!

I am getting lost as to who where what how I send it back :( Been on the shop website that says its quicker to send direct to canon than to them and then canon... been on canon website and thats just stupid..

Dunno what supposed to do :(

Thanks for the info re the problem.. what was the turnaround time?

I used my 1dmkII tonight... I didnt realise the difference was so big between the two.. stepping up seemed a small step.. stepping down is massive .

I sent mine to Fixation with a copy of my original receipt. Turnaround was about a week.

Phew I can live with a week.. will give em a ring.. Thanks :)

Not a 1D, but when I had a problem I sent it straight to Colchester Cameras with a copy of the receipt and they sorted it out very quickly.
Personally I would send it direct myself otherwise you take it too the shop, they fill in a form and send it away, repairer sends it to shop who then contact you or send it to you, so its quicker to cut out the middleman if possible.

Lets hope you get it sorted quickly, not good that is got a problem this soon :(

Bad news Kipax. If you're a member of CPS, they should give your repair priority and possibly a loaner camera.

CPS is that the 3 Ls and yer in? damm one short.

Isnt there a point you can demand a refund if something you ahve bought just keeps having to be repaired?

I think its 3 or 4 L's and 2 qualifying bodies.

How long have you had the camera? I'd be pretty titsed off, especially for something costing that sort of money. You could try for a refund, but I think Canon will take the view that their responsibility is just to fix it during the warranty period. I think you'd have to show that the camera was 'unfit for purpose' and go to law with the risk that you could lose and end up well out of pocket. I suppose you have to be fair and give Canon a chance to fix it, but once your confidence is knocked in a piece of kit it never feels the same.

Good luck.

I believe there's a 'reasonable use' clause in the trades descriptions act...you should be ok if you present your case clearly and all that

9 weeks and its knackered... The worry is what i ahve read on here that it could happen again and again.. wheres the reliability... Plus its a pain for me... I need the high iso for ice hockey on sunday .. I already pulled out of a fa vase replay tonight because i know its such a dark ground the iso of the mkII cant handle it.. I am self employed now and need soemthing a little more reliable.

Not happy but a week means just one weekend slumming it ... hopefully only one.

9 weeks! you would like to think a pro body should work for more than 9 weeks :/

How many shutter actuations had you built up in that time period ?

8 thousand+ but to be fair I am not doing 1k a week.. i got it in july just in time for tournaments in manchester and was doing 10 hrs a day solid football shooting for a week.. that built up the count straight off... But it should be able to handle heavy use.

I'd have thought so, after all you can't get more pro spec in the Canon world as a 1D.

Hope it gets fixed very soon :)

yeagh they cleaned my 300 L lens ..the person who sold it me got it done there when they conceded that there description of light dust was a million miles off the mark.

I think best is to contact all the canon centers and see which has the fastest turnaround for this job :)

Mine's at the 12k mark and going strong, fingers crossed.

CPS is 2 xD or xxd bodies and 3 L's plus some of the non-L primes such as 50mm 1.4, etc.

Well i have the two xd bodies and 2 L lens and 50m and a TC so i am close.... thinking of changing from sigma 70-200 to canon so that would get me in :) but not for that reason of course

You should be ok already, I joined with 2 xxd, 2 L's and a 50mm 1.4.

You can apply here: https://pro.canon-europe.com/

edit to add: Priority repair is returned within 6 days and a loan if it's going to take longer.

worth joining then.... will sort in morning when i can get serials out as i guess they want them... would wake the missus now:) THANKS!

8k is a lot in the timeframe but as you say they should be fit to handle that sort of abuse, thats what they are designed for.

It's supposedly rated to 300,000 which even at 1k per week is over 5 years use it certainly shouldnt be giving you any bother this early on.

You should have given me a shout mate, I could have lent you a D300 and a couple of lenses for the game......

hi send it back, it will difficult to work with out you camera get canon to send you a replacment of take it back to the shop thats who your contract is with and go for an exchange. you can lend my 400D:) to tide you over. it's got 4500 SActivations sisce new and still going beep:naughty:

regards mark.

Cheers guys.. As I say i ahve a 1dmkII as my second camera... can work with one for now :)

fractser.... get yerself over to colne tonight and shoot some footy then hehe.... wanna swap nikon for canon ? hmm can of worms :)

Unless the system has changed, your application is passed to a local CPS rep who considers your application and says yay or nay. It takes a few weeks, and it's the rep who makes contact with you in due course. You get a membership card and free quarterly EOS magazines. I don't think you should have any problems.

Yeagh i should be able to join easy anough.. But not in time for this problem..

Phoned canon and they are next to useless.... the only thing I got from them was an email with an url to there website and list of authorised repair peeps.. thats the only thing they did for me... no interest in anything I had to say.... dissapointed :(

Phoned fixation and they are looking at 2 days before they view it and around 2 weeks turnaround at best guess..

Tried phoning liehmans all morning but engaged all the time..

Colchester camera say just under 2 weeks and seemed more positive..

About to start crying here :(

This is interesting. I'm currently a canon user with a mk2n and 20D, but need a better second body and higher resolution. Looks like Nikon maybe the way to go, they don't seem to suffer the same lack of quality control

The D3's have their fair share of problems as well from what I've read on Pro forums. Ironic that the flagship cameras from both companies seem to be the ones that are most unreliable.

Yeagh I doubt swapping over is an option with the lens needing to be swapped as well.. although I do know a few that have gone down that rd... doubt i will.

Might be worth a punt calling this guy and explaining the problem:

according to canon help and service.. without a cps number its get stuffed... ramrkably poor standard of help... camera sent away this aft ....20 quid for next day insured delivery .

cheers everyone.. will update this thread as things happen as a record for anyone with same problem who may search for solutions :)

Well since theoretically I could register on there as a pro in that I do have 2 bodies and currently 2 soon to be 3 L lenses, perhaps I should do it in case I have a problem in the future - at least it would get a fast turnaround if repairs were needed.

Lets hope yours gets done and back to you very quickly.

You need to ring canon and get the number for the Elmstree service centre, they email you a shipping label and organise UPS to collect it from your door. Mine went in for the AF fix ages ago, I was without it for around 5-7 days..

I dropped mine on a pier before getting on a boat a few months ago, which caused the mirror to lockup and give error99, however a gentle nudge with my finger totally fixed it and its been ok since.. (phew)

I didnt know that... thanks to ever unhelpful canon help line :( So 20 quid wasted.... just gets better eh... BUT! I know for next time thanks :)

Givent he camera is under 90 days old, then you might have an argument to return it under the Sale of Goods act. Certainly there is an argument that at that price point and as a professional camera it should not fail in such short time. However, i've only ever had to invoke the SoG patter in one transaction on a brand new car. The advice i was given was slightly different to the norm as i was rejecting a product before i'd actually received it - if i'd accepted the car and afound the isuses later i would under law have to give the supplying dealer 3 attempts to fix the problem.

I'd have a look at the terms of sale for the shop where you purchased it, talk to the citizens advice bureau and then contact the shop in person. If you are earnign a livelihood from the camera you may be able to swing a replacement on the grounds of loss of earnings.

Gorrit.. thanks for that.. gonna go do that now :)

Sorry to hear about your trouble KIPAX, just ordered my MkIII. Canon Elstree IS the best point of contact for repairs/seviceing.

We need to look into the bearing of the Sale of Goods Act on items bought for business use, but for personal use (of such a short time) the camera should've been returned to the dealer for replacement or refund. You really need to kick some ass using the dealer as your middleman.
