1D MK111 & !DS MK111 RECALL LINK

Mine is all packed ready along with my 300f2.8.:D must be costing them a fotune just collecting all these cameras.

So you talked them into taking the 300!! Well done..

What are they doing to your 300? Interested as I've got a 300 2.8 as well which is +10 on the microadjustment at the mo so I'm wondering if they can work some magic on the 1DIII and the lens at the same time.

Furthermore, if they really did have the "final" solution, how does it help to have Canon customers continuing to struggle on for months with sub-standard equipment while Nikon keeps getting it right, over and over again?

I'm not much of a fan of ludicrously high megapixel counts. I neither need them or want them, but I find it interesting that Nikon's D3X is now cheaper in the UK than Canon's virtually prehistoric 1Ds3. Canon really needs to wake up and start pulling rabbits out of hats, before it's too late.

The 5D2, with its own problems (black spots and banding), consumer grade AF, crippled video mode and limp-along frame rate is not the answer. Neither is letting the MK IIIs continue to struggle with questions remaining over AF performance.

Without adding fire to the Canon V Nikon debate Nikon have now got it right twice with the D3 and D3X. I have been unfortunate enough to have used the D1, D1h, D2h and all of these were not a patch on what Canon had out at the time, yellow skin tones, random colour balance, bits dropping off and really ropey AF to name a few problems.
The D3 is what I've been waiting for Canon to produce since the 1ds, hopefully the mk4 will be full frame with 8fps.

Indeed. Basically, since Nikon woke up and started using CMOS sensor technology. What were they thinking before then????

I think Canon will wow with the next line of pro bodies and that this fix is to sort out the existing ones before they release the next gen.

They might, but they've got a job on their hands to a) get people to be the beta testers again and b) win back those now happy in the opposing camp, as it were.

The 1D III has been a PR disaster for them, and one that'll take a fair while to win people over IMO.

Not really, i think that the next camera isnt trying to win people back but to keep the current crop of customers after the fail/issues of the 1dmkIII

While the mkIII has had its problems, its amazing how many people still bought them and still want them

Just had my text message to say it's sorted and ready to be picked up. Wonder if I will get it tomorrow?

I cant wait to hear peoples feedback

I doubt you'll be the only one!

2nd text,

just been picked up by UPS with tracking number!

exciting stuff

you can tell I'm bored eh!

Well just had the 1Ds returned - just as well as I was getting the DT's since Tuesday - the only reference as to what was done is:

'All the necessary checks and adjustments were carried out as per the Canon UK web announcement of march 2009.

Rep-work: AF - Accuracy - CHK/ADJ'.

No reference to any parts.

Have also just been emailed that the 1D is on its way back to me - both were collected on Tuesday - so they appear to be doing a quick turn around.

PS. All settings were unchanged except images were set to large jpg instead of the original RAW.

Just got my two back today and the AF is realy poor.
It worked fine before and now it's just so bad.

LOL: only joking I am still waiting for them to come back.

Mines just been picked up, I'll be using the good old MK1 at Race Retro this weekend. I was told that there's a big batch arriving at Canon on Tuesday, so with mine arriving on Monday, I should have it back before the weekend, just as well as virtually every weekend is booked up until October. I also asked the question "what's actually entailed in the re-call" and was told that it's a software update! Let's see what the results are like?

Just got mine back. No hardware changes just recalibration and adjustment. But, as the paperwork suggests, the microadjust settings need redoing.

I registered mine a few days ago but no word or email yet from canon on a collection date.

They must be busy...

Mine was collected yesterday and I've just received a text message saying it's on its way home with UPS...I'd guess that they had it for less than 9 hours.

Bob

They come for mine at 3.30 with no paperwork:cuckoo: got a recipt and let them take it anyway.

Mine was returned today, very quick turn around , Monday to Friday.
I'd already installed the new firmware but they claim to have updated it to the latest version.

"all adjustments and necessary testing have been completed to Canon factory standards and your camera should now be operating in accordance with product specifications" I'd guess that's just the "standard" letter.

None of my custom settings had changed either, although it was set to shoot jpg instead of raw so presumably they'd been making test shots. No mention of any screws, washers or any other hardware modifications.

I can't really do any serious testing until tomorrow, I'll reserve judgement until then, but I'm not convinced... hopeful, but not convinced. Which is probably the most sensible attitude you could take in this debacle. We'll see.

Maybe they must have decided it was a beyond salvage :D

Anything's possible....maybe they want the user shipped in for service :(

There's a guy on FM who seems happy with the results although his subjects don't look like they're overly taxing for the AF system

I don't think Galbraith used a tortoise for his af tests!!!!:lol::lol: I might have been tempted to use one shot.........:bonk::bonk::bonk:

I suspect f/32 at Iso100 with an ND10 on a cloudy day would have still been possible.

Bob

I just got mine back now and the paperwork doesnt really say what has been done, basically just says warranty recall repair.
But anyway they did a full service too and cleaned both the sensor and my lens so its back to being spotless which saved me a couple of quid in paying for it to be done so I'm happy :)

....and the result would just have been the same!!! (although with more DOF)

i just wish i could afford a canon 1d mk III id be a happy bunny then even if the AF didnt work lol

the nice person fron canon said they would fix this at the same time... :baby:

Picked up on Wednesday. Shipped out on Friday. Should arrive with me on Monday. When I booked it in for Wednesday pickup I was told to expect it back on Wednesday next week, maybe Tuesday, so Monday is a bonus.

Any more experiences of anyone who's had the fix!!???

Had my 1Ds returned on Friday and used that for some bird shots over the w/e. I normally use the ID for birds so therefore it is not strictly a like for like for reference.

I did feel that the camera was 'hunting' less and images looked sharper straight from the camera. The Goldfinch, posted in the Bird forum on Saturday, is an example of that. The Chaffinch and Dunnock also posted have had some sharpening applied in PP.

Should get the 1D back today so more direct comparison testing will be possible.

C'mon people, i want to see more tests!
