Since I've had my 1D MK IV I've still been using the 50D for my insect macro stuff. The 50D does a cracking job of it but I thought I'd try the 100 macro on the 1D.

My normal shooting style is to get reasonably close and fire off a shot in case I disturb the insect and slowly creep closer taking shots until I get as close as I can. This means that I normally get a shot of the insect even if it's not as close as I'd like.

I tried this with the 1D and completely failed, as soon as I took a shot the noise of the shutter scared the insect off so I only got one go at any insects.

Looks like I'm sticking with the 50D for insects. I'm glad I didn't buy the 1D for insect macro, I'd have been gutted.

Is there no quiet shutter mode on the MK IV? The one on my 1Dmk2n is a lot more quiet than the 50D shutter.

Have you tried the silent shutter mode?

+1. Live view will give you a very quiet shutter. Makes it easier to see where the focus is too.

I didn't know there was a silent shutter mode. I must have read the manual a dozen times and not come across that. :bang: I'll have to dig the manual out again.

One of my 1DIV's is permanently setup for macro....Z-Finder mount for Liveview and split prism screen for regular viewfinder shooting. I've not been aware that it spooks things more than any body I've used in the past. Stick with Mike

I found the silent mode today. I wandered what the S was for when I was switching drive modes.:bonk:

I'm not sue if it's quieter than the 50D but it's certainly comparable.

it supprises me that the 1d shutter is that much louder than the 50d.

Well it's bigger for a start so there's more mass moving around which I'd presume would make more noise?

are bugs actually bothered by noise?

Wouldn't you run away from a Canon shooter? Ah, your sig, poor man:lol:;)

I seem to recall that a high percentage of insects can hear via antennae or tympanal organs (although clarification from a recent student is better than my memory and no doubt spelling) so they're either interpreting the noise as a predator or are camera shy.

And hopefully I've not given a vaguely serious answer to a tongue and cheek comment:lol:
