1D Mk IV high iso sports examples anyone?

Can I ask a quick side question about that, as I am just starting to move back to Jpeg?

Do you set a manual WB and then readjust as the light changes, or rely on Auto - which seems a touch risky?

Hi Mark, I have never shot Raw TBH, so I honestly don't know of any advantages?, I usually set my WB to "cloudy" most of the time, even in direct sunlight!, as this gives a little lattitude in editing IMHO

Cant speak for gary.,.but as i shoot jpg not raw as well.. personally its auto WB outdoors and set the WB manually indoors
Auto during the day but manual under floodlights unless they have poor coverage then its back to auto and correct in post IF NEEDED

As Gary states, most modern DSLR's AWB should be ok for outdoors. Interiors are different due to varying types of lighting. In some venues AWB is ok and in some it cannot cope. I use an expodisk for the tricky ones.

Should add that todays Pro DSLR's do a magnificent job with auto WB

From my limited experience, I'd tend to agree in that I was shooting a speech in an art gallery on Sunday and the Mk3 coped fine on Auto both with and without flash.

Having stuck to RAW up until now it's a slight leap of faith losing control over certain aspects (even though LR can adjust in post to an extent) but I need to use Jpegs now for speed of upload.

I was interested in how you guys deal with it on a day to day basis, and the consensus seems to be Auto with manual for testing light.

Thanks for the answers and apologies for going OT.

I shoot jpeg as well - much smaller, faster than RAW for post processing. And with Lightroom I find it easy to push the exposure on jpegs or alter white balance or whatever - no problem at all.

For any paid non-sports work I'll tend to use RAW where I can take my time over the post processing.

eh ??? jpgs have less noise than raw on any camera mate...I only shoot in jpg btw.

The general opinion is that the mkIV and d3s are on a par to around iso 6400 then the d3s is better at higher iso.. I ahve no illusions about that.. its not a willy swinging contest :) the mkIV has better af and other bits.. but I am thinking probably only on paper :)
i shoot jpeg and have noise reduction turned off so its the same as raw, it will only be less than raw if you have jpeg noise reduction turned on..
my computer software does a better job of noise reduction than my camera.

Sorry but your wrong.. Not all cameras have built in noise reduction BTW.

A JPG is compressed.. A raw isnt.. Therefore there will be far less noise to be seen in a jpg than a raw because of the compression.. not because of noise reduction.

sorry yes i see what you mean now,
and i all my cameras have had the option to turn it of or set it at different levels.

until the later canon 1ds i have never seen that option before..certainly wasnt in the mkII or my 10d

Strange...I was talking to the guy at the our camera club about this...he shoots the ice hockey team 'Braehead Clan' in Glasgow...

He says he turns on HTP at the high ISOs to get the shots without much noise...sure he uses his 1DmkIV for the shots...

Strange co-incidence...

Just that I had the same thing last night...not the most common thing...shooting hockey...with a 1D MkIV...talking about High ISO...

Considering I dont shoot sports...yet...okay...for me it was strange...LOL...!

Right i thought you where referiing to the noise reduction and comment i had made ..you thought strange..

all cleared up now... I will cancel the contract I put out :) .....if I can.

I posted an image before were the noise was very very bad even at 3200 ISO.

Now this week I've had to send the ID MK IV in to Elstree for adjustments to the AF System, as I was having load of problems with the AI Servo not tracking.

Not tested it out yet as I only got it back tonight (excellent service time from Canon using CPS) , but I've just taken a VERY non scientific shot at 12800 ISO and it's a million trillion times better than before.

ISO 128.000

Both pics slightly cropped.

1. Straight off the card.

2. Less than a minute to sharpen and Neat Image, very useable @ 300 DPI.
