Just purchased some Sandisk 4GB SD cards but camera unable to format them. I think the problem is that they are SD HD cards so not compatible, but cannot find any reference to this in the camera manual. Anybody got any thoughts?
Thanks

I can use 4gb sdhc extreme 3's in mine and the camera formats them ok. had problems with 8gb so stuck to 4's.

As long as they have the latest firmware, then both the 1DII (and N) and 1DsII will support SDHC. I run 16Gb Transcend in mine and they are great!

Thanks for all the advice. Realise I made a mistake in the card description - it should beSan Disk Extreme III SDHC 4GB. However, from comments passed it appears I may need to update my firmware. Not being familiar with this, can anyone provide an idiots guide?
thanks

Click to go to the firmware download page and follow the instructions there.

Hang on Guys. Just properly read through the link that Canon Bob supplied and this appears to show me how to do everything. Will try it and let you know.
Todays lesson is RTFA..... read the f*****g answer!

Thanks Euan.

I had to upgrade my MKII firmware from 1.2.4 to 1.2.6 (I think it was those anyway...) to be able to use the larger SD cards :)

Not good news. Followed the guide and managed to download the firmware update to my computer. Only trouble is that the name of the update does not appear to have be the same as that given in the guide. However, then copied this to a CF card, put card in camera only to get a message that a card with the update should be inserted. Went back and read instructions, and totally failed to understand the term "root directory". Never had any form of computer training - yes I am of a certain age - why do people assume you know these things. Have not smoked for ten years, now considering restarting as so ******* frustrated. I have wasted two hours over this. No more hair left to pull out. Run out of booze. Cats and wife have left the house. Going for a walk -I may be considerable time!

All I want to do is take pictures. Is that too much to ask!!!!!!!!!!!!!

What is the name of the file that you have currently.
The 'root' directory, is the topmost directory on your storage card (to be honest, I find it easier to not put it on the card, but use the EOS Utility instructions instead)

Have you unzipped the firmware update

The file for updating the firmware can be downloaded at the bottom of this page.
Select the compressed, self-extracting file appropriate for your OS and double-click to extract.

Did you double click he file to let it extract before you put it on the CF card, as mentioned above put it straight on the card not in any folders.

Thanks for the continued advice. Working nights last night, so have not had chance to reply.
File I have downloaded is titled eos1dmk2n112 and is a .exe file. Also, no mention of unzipping the file which I havn't a clue as to how to do.
Hopefully, an enlightened neighbour will have a look for me tonight.
I will let you know the results.
Thanks again

The Clue is here

If you double click on the file you download and let it do its thing, you should then end up with another file which corrisponds to the name in the guide. This file is the one that should be copied to the CF card. :geek:

Thanks fezzr, have just done that and now have a file named 1D2N0112.BIN which I think is what I should have. Is this the unzipped file? Will now try and copy this to a CF card and see what happens.

thats the one stick that straight on your compact flash card, then do the update.

EUREKA! YABADABADOO! LET THE MUSIC PLAY! BRING ON THE DANCING GIRLS!YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS! Its worked. Thank you so much everybody. You have no idea of how grateful I am. I know i'm not incapable, but at times I get so frustrated and annoyed by technical instructions that assume you already know something, so do not explain fully what is required. Now for some more photos.

Not a problem, glad it worked ok how have you got on with your sd hc cards now?

Thanks again everybody. Cards all now formatted and ready for use. All I want now is some light!
