I've just been reminiscing with the missus about Blackpool in the 50s. I vaguely remember going on pleasure boat trips directly off the beach and getting to the boats by being ferried out on some kind of motorised landing craft type of vehicle. I would be about 6/7 years old, so around 1958 ish. The wife says I'm dreaming as she can't recall anything of the sort. I have searched for photo's on the net but can't find anything. Am I dreaming this? Come on you old folk help me out here.

I can remember such boat trips and vehicles. But they may not have been at Blackpool.

I can vaguely remember Blackpool in the '50's (I was born in 1948) I can remember donkey rides and I think I've got some photo's somewhere. Nothing about boats or landing craft though.

It's a strange place, always tacky of course but that was part of its attraction. I rarely go now, they must have spent a fortune on the "front" but although there are some genuinely nice areas, and without wishing to insult anyone who lives there, I find it rather tatty now and a bit of a dump, such a pity.

There's tatty, and there's 'threatened by a drunk chav woman spitting in your face whilst you have your toddler with you'

Vowed never to set foot in the place again.

I have of a photo of me as a young kid in the early 60's (61-62 at a guess) sitting on a DUKW on Blackpool beach....if I can dig it out then it'll be scanned and posted.

Was there still WW2 barbed wire on the beach ?

A mate stayed in a Blackpool B&B a while ago. The room was small so he moved the bed to make a bit more space and the cockroaches moved it back :arghh:

Gone by then to be replaced by deck chairs as tank traps and a cavalry of brats on donkeys (sixpence a ride and I was gauranteed to pick the one with an imminent bowel movement) :(
