That is the question?!

I've been thinking about getting a tripod for a while and have been looking at the 190XProB. However now the 055XProB looks like a nice tripod as well as it's more well built and bigger, but bigger means heavier!

Just wondering if you guys could help out. Which would you say?? I know which head I want easy - 804RC2

I have the 190xproB and have found it very hard wearing and easy to use.
 
I had the same decision to make last year - I went for the 190PROB in the end, I had a huge Velbon one that I never used out-and-about because it was too big and heavy, I actually carry and use the 190 because its pretty light but still sturdy enough. The big heavy Velbon does get used at home though for studio type shots.
I coupled mine with the 488RC2 head.
 
I've never really understood why weight (as in 'It's heavy') is a problem?

A tripod has one main function in life... to be rock steady - which means it should weigh a fair bit

Look at it this way - if you want to save a few pounds on a long walk, lose the gut !!! [Forgive me all you size 6s!]

Most togs, that I've ever met, could easily lose a pound or two by cutting a couple of week's curries/beer out thus balancing out the weight of the chunky tripod

When I was at Focus this year one make (nameless, cos I can't remember) had two tripods on sale - one aluminium, one carbon fibre, they were the same size, range, everything the same - only their weight differed. The 'fat-boy' aluminium one being 450grams heavier but £250 cheaper

A good session on the loo can remove 450grams FFS ! Take a Senokot and save the money!

A tripod that can attain a height of up to 6ft NEEDS to weigh quite a bit, or there's no point having it

Join a gym to get stronger or go on a diet, but don't complain cos a tripod is 7lbs instead of a graphite one at 3lbs - in the sensible real world it doesn't matter

Last thought though - always make sure you get (a) good head though

At the moment I'm carrying a Mini Trekker which is full!! Camera, 5 lenses(one being a 80-200mm), 3 Nikon SB's, Super clamp and a Portaflash LS3 lightstand on my back. Then I'm also carrying my other bag which has my Bronica SQ-A with backs as well. Then in my other hand I have two Portaflash LS1 lightstands.

I keep fit by skateboarding and keeping active so I don't need to join a gym and I'm 6ft 4in and am very fit.

The tripod is mainly for my Bronica as it's a lot easier to set up when you have a tripod so I was wondering if it was better to get a 190 or 055. So the fact that I'm carrying s *** loads already

Have a good poo before setting out - that'll save 2lbs on a 6'4" person, take a smaller flask of coffee (saving another 2lbs) - and go on a warm day (no jumper, trousers, coat = 3lb saving) - total weight saving is enough to carry a PROPER TRIPOD !!!

All joking aside - regardless of the reasons (or excuses) about not carrying one because of weight or size etc. If someone uses one because it's easier/lighter to carry thats a good thing, it can only improve their shots - if the 'user' deems it too big/heavy and leaves it at home it's just a bl**dy ornament (albeit a strong firm one) in the corner of the spare room! :)
 
Make sure you try out the 055XProB's top column changing gizmo.... It's not to everyone's taste.

Basically - if you want to use the tripod at very low levels, the 055 will require moving the central column to the vertical position, where I believe (and may be wrong) the 190 has a stubby column adaptor at the base of the normal column.

If someone carries a 1lb tripod cos it weighs sod all will it actually improve their shots? Or just make them think it does because it's a 'tripod'?

Many peeps shoot with the mirror lock-up function, why? To stop the thump of the mirror making a difference, but if you fart near a light tripod it'll move more than it would without mirror lock-up

Actually, I don't use my (heavy[???] 055XB) much, but I carry it miles so if I do need it - it was worth carrying

In t'olden days peeps walked miles with a plate camera and a massive tripod - today, aren't we in danger of just turning into a bunch of marketing lead techie/richer wimps ???

Just bought a 190XPROB from Morris photo, arrived yesterday so hasn't been given a proper test yet, but its nice to use and sturdy. First impressions are very good. In case you're interested I bought it with the RC322 ball head, which I'm also very impressed with after an evening of fiddling around.

Okay then here's the easy answer to making it more sturdy

Try NOT to shoot at full height unless the shot REALLY needs it, then still use the 'rule' of reciprocal focal length/shutter speed

Hand your camera bag off of the legs somewhere to add weight at the point of shooting

Yesterday I went into calumet to buy a monopod - the very helpful sales assistant pulled two models out to their full length - and after looking at the one that was taller than I am, promptly bought it! :lol: I reckon if its stable at the height, it can't be less stable if never used at full stretch

I wanted a tripod that I didn't need to extend the centre column (much) for the same stability reasoning

My Bronica will not be going to full height anyway as it has a WLF which you need to look down into. So having a tripod to for my height is irrelevant as I will not need it up to my eye level.
 
I was going to get the 190xprob (without actually seeing it up close), and was thinking about it for some time, since my old tripod was dying a slow death:lol:. But then I bought a 2.6kg lens, so the 190 was out of the question and went for the 055xprob. The thing is that when I went to the store to get the tripod, I saw the 190 and it was too short and too flimsy for my taste. It just didn't feel right. I am 6'1" at 174lb, not really fit to say the least but I don't mind carrying this beauty wherever I go. Just get a nice bag for it and you won'd even notice it's there. I know it's a bit on the heavy side, but it's so well built, I don't really mind!
 
I went for the 055, as it's so sturdy. I am 5' 3 and although it is quite heavy, it's fine to carry strapped to my mini trekker.
 
I have the Manfrotto tripod bag that came with my 055XB (worth £29 apparently), and of course its never been used - anyone wanting it can have it for the p&p and a donation to TP (amount at your discretion) - though God only knows how I'd wrap it for posting!

This is the dilema i was having and after reading this i have gone more towards the 055 now, the extra hight and weight that it can take looks good for me :D
Sold to the man in the blue hat :lol: :woot:
 
I was also in the same position, I ended buying the 055XProB. Picked it up for £105 from T4 Cameras :)
