I've decided to set myself another challenge to go alongside my photo52.

Churches intrigue me, and there's plenty of them, so the challenges are;

- Tog 18 churches by christmas
- Use 18mm
- At least two churches per week
- All must be different
- day and night time allowed.
- At least one church with some sort of sunet.

Hoping to learn

- How to use a rotate tool corectly
- How to capture a good sky with the church
- How to compose to make things less boring
- How to improve my general PP

Church 1 of 18. Newhall Church

I can't decide on which composition here, none of them perfect! The rotate tool has not been used just yet!

Church 2 of 18 - Church Gresley.

Quite a pretty little church, I think I got there at the wrong time of the day though as can be seen by the shaddows.

You may need the perspective/pincushion tool more?
(the tower look like its bending inwards - might be an optical illusion tho)

Good luck, and its true loads of churches. Perhaps you should map them out and do several in a day (especially as weather will be against you in some....)

Will be keeping an eye on this one as there are loads of churches around where I live and looking at your first two have given me an instant interest.
I'm thinking (like you) at sunrise or sunset and maybe some foreground interest too.
I look forward to seeing more.

PS Might even try some HDR

Bet of Luck Joe, I love doing the churches :D don't discount night times :D I'm up your way again today

I've just realised that my last 3 photo's of the day have been churches  must do something different today

Thanks matt, I have to say that your shots inspired me to do this little project. At night time, do you find there's generally enough light to do a long exposure (without your painting techniques) :D

Yeah I usually find there's enough light  usually from street lights but if you can get out on a full or nearly full moon you can get a really a nice exposure in about 30-60 seconds it will take longer the lower the ISO that you use I would recommend say a ISO of 200 and use a longer exposure :D unless you want to go for star trails then I would go for shorter exposure but a higher ISO

I'm honoured to have acted as an inspiration  and look forward to being an inspiration :)

Oh i like the sound of this thread!, I also love taking pictures of churches, and know a few real crackers!
looking forward to seeing what you get:thumbs:

also, FAO Matt, Coleorton church would be a superb Star trail as it's pitch black, just off the A42 at Ashby de la Zouch

Thanks for the heads up Joe, we will have to meet up and have a go there when there is a clear night

It may just be me but it looks like Coleorton church in in need of a little CCW rotation

The following is not to be included in my 18, as I don't quite know what happened to it?

any C&C on # 3 of 18 ? I feel it lacks the ooomph, but I can't figure out what.

I wouldnt mind a play with that last one, if you dont mind, i cant seem to see if your edit box is ticked or not though, so i didnt just want to go ahead without a thumbs up first:)

Iv had a quick play with it, couldnt really do what i wanted to as the image became really noisy, as i only used a small file size, but anyway this is what i ended up with

Good idea Joe.
There are several churches around my way which are nicely lit at night, I keep meaning to go and give them a shot.

Looking forward to seeing how your project grows, and I've got my fingers crossed for a snow shot!

Hi Darrell. where do you work? I may send you some of my pictures to play with then pop down with my crow bar while you're not looking at those monitors :suspect:

Sorry, it's the Scouser in me :D

Nice PP on the church, I'm guessing HDR?

Hi,

Sorry for the late response.

Pincushion/warp type things are probably under your distort menu.
Perspective should be on the control toolbox.

Had a play with the small image using Gimp (lens correction is under filters>distort menu).

This is the result :
church1.jpg

Nice pics of churches so far :)

Ecniv that's superb! I am a noob in that I had no idea this could be done reasonably well. I suppose with the original file it may be a little easier.

GIMP has been downloaded, now to learn it...! Can I vignette in it?

Hi joe,

Skies ---- take some pics of just skies whenever they look great... you can replace the bland ones with something a little better - not always a good thing but nice if you have a few just in case :D

GIMP has been downloaded, now to learn it...! Can I vignette in it?

As to vignette, haven't found a decent way, but there are several ways to achieve. Main one is a black (or white) layer, with a mask. The mask has an ellipse in the middle and blurs off heavily to leave dark corners.

Using Gimp something along these lines:
Create a new pic the size of your camera pics
Fill the layer with black (Paint bucket on tools)
Select the Ellipse tool (top row of tools, second in)
Click n drag top left to bottom right (close to the corners as possible)
On the layers window, right click on the layer and select 'add alpha channel' (near the bottom of the menu)
Right click again on the layer and select add mask (middle of the menu)
Select the white (full opacity) option
Select the Paint bucket and fill in the middle of the ellipse with black.
On the Menu Select>None (to remove the selection)
Filters>Blur>Gaussian
Change the number to 500px
Click Ok.
Repeat if you want more blur
Change the layer Opacity to 70% (on the layers window).
Save as 'vignette.xcf'

You can then copy the whole thing by clicking in the layers window on the lhs of the image (it will copy the image and mask) and edit>paste as>new layer into the pic you want. Change the opacity to suit pic...

Hope that helps... One of many ways to do it.

More nice churches :)
