18-55mm Lens - What is its best use, advantages and limitations?

Hi,

Firstly, thanking you for taking the time to read my thread.

I have just purchased the Nikon D3000 with std kit lens, 18-55mm VR as a gift to myself. I am promoting myself from point and click holiday snaps with a compact to taking photography more seriously as a pastime. After seeing a local photography exhibition I have been bitten by the bug and have purchased a few magazines and been blown away, both by what can be done with a camera and an creative imagination, and how much there is to know about taking a photography....LOL.

As I am just starting out learning the ins and outs of depth of focus, ISO, etc, etc, I was wondering what type photography my current and only lens best lends itself too. Is it fairly versatile or does it best lend itself to a certain type of photography? What limitations does it have?

Hi :)

The 18-55 is a decent enough lens that will do you for most everyday situations (but not zoom on wildlife etc). To be honest, the best thing to do is get out there and take some pictures - it's the best way to learn.

Oh, and read the manual, rather than being a generic pile of rubbish, DSLR manuals will teach you quite a bit about photography :)
 
The main limitation is the lack of wide aperture - it's not good in low light. I love it and it's great for everything.
 
It's not a bad little lens for the money. I get some fairly nice landscapes with it (which reminds me to get busy and upload some :D) and is a general use bit of kit. It's ideal to start learning your craft before you progress to other lenses.
