18-55mm help

Hi

i was trying to take photos today with my standard 18-55mm. When i had it in manual focus it bleeped when it was in focus and the red dots came up showing it was and yet when i changed it to auto focus it didn't register at all.

is the lens faulty?

I hate to paraphrase IT Crowd, but have you tried turning it off and on again?
Also, you might want to try it but taking the battery out for a few minutes. Just in case the firmware had a bit of a panic going on there.

Also, make sure the contacts are free from dirt/dust.

Has the AF/Manual button been fully pushed back( or forward)?

can someone help what is A-DEP mode

A-DEP looks at all of the focus points (they all get used even if switched off by manual selection) and selects an aperture (with suitable shutter speed) to ensure that all the focus points are within the depth of field.

I find it useful occasionally, especially if there is a big depth of field.

Last time I used it was a large area (motorbike club stand at a show) where I actually just held the camera up high above my head, pointing in roughly the right direction on widest 18mm and hit the button. Crude but effective.
