Used to own the Sigma OS version, loved it though at either ends it was soft at the edges.
Obviously there's compromise with such a zoom for this money, but it's compromise i'm willing to deal with when i need a decent zoom for travelling about. So there's 3 or 4 real contenders really, the Tamron VC, Sigma (they have two OS lenses) and the Canon IS.

Just want to know if anyone has had any experience of the Canon, Sigma OS HSM and the Tamron VC. I know there are concerns over the locking mechanisms on the Canon lens.

I have a 30D but i'm thinking of getting a smaller body too like a 450D and putting an 18-200mm on it to use primarily for travel and as a second body if need be.

I will be keeping an eye on this thread as these are one of the lenses I've been thinking of getting.

I haven't had any experience with any of them but after doing some google researching its seems that the most popular/prefered is the Sigma as it beats the Tamron on build quality.

There are many sites with lots of photos from these lenses so have a look whilst waiting for a reply on here.

Initially, after my experience with the Sigma i'm leaning to the newer model, however i've seen the original OS version for sale at £200 which is an absolute bargain. I paid £320 for mine new when it was released.

I've got Canon 18-200 and it's not really good at the wide end, neither was Sigma's equivalent which I had for a short time. Canon seems decent on the telephoto end though, better than Sigma. Then again Canon costs twice as much and for that price you might consider getting micro 4/3 camera which seems to be more convenient for travelling

It is very easy. Canon 17-55mm f/2.8 IS + 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II. You can't beat that.

I think you've just somewhat missed the point. The OP is looking at reasonably budget walkabout lenses, circa £300-£350, not (undoubtedly excellent) top end glass which is going cost the wrong side of £3500 if bought new.

The Sigma 18-250mm f3.5-6.3 DC OS HSM has done well in tests in the magazines and on line. I think it's around the £400 mark.
