Ok, i think i've finally narrowed it down to one of the two lenses above.

I can get the 18-135mm for £200 odd with a UV filter

My local camera shop had the 18-200mm VR for £550 yesterday, but i'm hoping to knock them down on the price.

My situation is that i do want a decent zoom, but for amateur use. I know the VR lens is the better option but its £300+ more than the other one. I cant really justify the extra expense

is it worth the extra expense?? or can i get away with the 135mm, seeing as though i just want a good zoom for taking general pictures on for personal use, and not publishing etc.

Your honest opinions will be appreciated,as i'm hoping to get my new lens today

many thanks

From a 18-200VR point of view I can say it is an excellent lens.

I can't really comment on the 18-135 as I've not used it but you could get it and a 1.4 or 1.7 (or even a 2x) TC for a bit of extra length if needed.

It really depends on how much use you will get out of the extra 65mm. What type of photography are you into?

I like portraits, landscapes and general family shots. are you refering to a converter? i've never used a converter, are they any good?

Be careful on the TC choice MG ... ... I am not sure the 18 200mm VR is compatible with any ...

As for the lens itself it is a superb bit of kit and well worth the extra expense imgo ...

You would not regret it I am sure as it provides so much more versatility and who knows when you might need it in the future ... ;)

Like PB I have not used the 18 - 135 so cannot possibly comment ...

At the end of the day (today even ... :D) ... it comes down to being your choice I am afraid ... but do try them both in the shop before you make your decision ... :D

:p

I'm gonna call them now and see what kinda deals they will do for a cash sale?

I know the 18-200mm VR is the better choice in the long run, and the reviews i've read for the lens, seem very good.

I'm gonna try them both out again today. Actually i didnt try the 18-200VR as someone else was viewing it, but if they do a decent deal, i may very well consider the 200VR.

I'm off to call them now, and i'll get back to you with their price, if they change it of course, lol

They cant do anything on the price, but they will throw in a UV filter. not sure how much these go for, and if its a good deal personally. i know you can get them online for cheaper, but how do i know if they are grey imports. i've been assured that the stock at the local camera store is UK stock.

oh well, gonna call Jessops now and see if they do a price match on this lens. i've got a voucher from a magazine saying that they will price match any price in the magazine, but as i cant collect the lens in store it may be a problem.

In stock HERE for £458 squids MG ...

Thats a good price for the lens definetly, however, if i take into account that i'm gonna get a UV filter lens, and will be able to potentially walk out today with the lens, for only £4 more, i'm gonna get it locally if i like it.

getting excited now, cant wait to get my new lens. whichever one i opt for

UV filters aren't worth that much...Sounds to me like they're trying to make you think it's a good deal. Remember, Jessops aren't the only camera shop!!!

I wouldn't buy either tbh - Jack of all trades, master of none.

I would look at: Nikon 18-70, Sigma 70-200 2.8 both second-hand. You would get both for about the same price of the 18-200 but IQ would be so much higher

'Fraid I agree. Seems a lot more to pay for the slight convienience of not having to switch lenses, and on top of that you're losing IQ...

Just IMO

As mentioned yesterday its also available for £464.40 here with a £10 discount at checkout with code "tecno10".

If money is an issue why pay £100 more just to get the lens 1 day earlier? For an extra £3-4 you can upgrade to next day delivery, sounds much better than £100 :D

As for the UV filter, for the cheaper option there is this one here, but i would recommend getting this, as theres no point putting cheap filters on expensive glass. :)

As for the 18-135, its price reflects the performance against the 18-200VR. The 18-200VR is well worth the extra money.

Sorry for any confusion, just to clarify, my local camera shop has both an online shop and a bricks and mortar shop. the price instore was £550, but the price online was £500. I called the online shop number and asked if they could do a better deal, but they cant as its a genuine UK lens. they will throw in a UV filter though. so the price i'd pay is £500 for the 18-200mm VR

To also clarify, i'm not in any way a die hard photographer, simply a mum who wants to take good quality shots of her child and family. my compact camera wasnt providing me with any good photos, so i decided to get a DSLR, and so far i've been really impressed with the photos. However, my kit lens 18-55mm doesnt have enough of a focal length for me to be satisfied. i like to take candid shots of my little one, so i want a decent focal lens. I dont want loads of lens, and i just want a good all round lens to satisfy my needs.

so sorry for any confusion

I own the 18-200, and it's a very handy lens to have. Not the ultimate in image quality, but I've put shots with it next to shots taken with the 70-200 VR and most people wouldn't know the difference. Sometimes ultimate quality matters, mostly it doesn't.

By the same token if the convenience factor of 11x range isn't something you need, then better go for the 18-135mm.

You can get the 18-200 for 415 on Ebay

Delivered price, no more to pay. Experience is that delivery is 2-3 days max, so saving nearly £150. You can buy another lens with that kind of saving.... :)

Thanks i went for the 18-135mm. I do plan to get the 18-200mm VR lens one day, hopefully as my interest in photography progresses. I really couldnt justify the £500 for the lens at the moment. Keeping my fingers crossed that it'll go down in price soon too. Thank you all for your advice, i really do appreciate it

Congratulations MG ... ... hope you enjoy it and it does everything you need it to ... ;) ... will be good to see some images once you are sorted ... :D

:p

Thanks venomator. I would like to upload some photos, but they are nowhere near as good as the ones i've seen here. gonna practice soon with my new lens, and hopefully one day i'll get the courage to upload some
