I had traders insurance at 18 - was cheaper than insuring a single car, might be worth looking at?

Try your parents insurance company, some companies give a discount for insuring more than one car.
Other than that just try all the insurance supermaket/comparison sites. But be sure to log a password onto these sites and remember the reference numbers/passwords. If you want to return to the quote at a later date. Quotes tend to alter by the day. My son had quotes with Quinn insurance through one of the comparison sites and there was £60 difference between the quotes he got on two seperate days.
Give Quinn a try anyway as they were cheaper for my son by several hundred pounds to the next quoted company.
Beware though a company can be cheaper for some but more expensive for others.

I found that elephant were cheapest for me a few years ago, and they had the ncb accelerator ie you have a 10 month policy instead of 12 but still get 1 year ncb so can build it up quicker, but yeah check out the ole meercat or the likes :p

I've recently had this problem. I tried to get my lad insured for an 04 plate 1.25cc Fiesta. I bought it at £3000. The best quote i could get was £5,250 for third party only.
I tried all of the main companies. It was cheaper for when he had a provisional, but went crazy when he passes.
I have to say, i wasn't impressed with the attitude of any of the companies I spoke to. Its a real 'got you by the balls' attitude and like it or lump it.
I ended up putting him on my traders policy for £300 fully comp.
I truly sympathise with you guys who can't do that.

Kev.

My son passed his test back in July. To put him on my insurance policy would have been £1900. We started looking at getting him a Fiesta as a 1st car with a budget of upto £2000. Insurance was going to be £2500+. But all the cars we looked at were really bad, no way were they worth anywhere near the asking prices. He ended up with a W reg Focus 1.6 Zetec, £1400 to buy but the insurance was £3000. It was all swings and roundabouts really having to trade off the cost of insurance against at least having a semi decent car to drive.

When I was getting insurance the first year Tesco was by far the cheapest. Now Swift cover is the cheapest - now 23 with 3 years NCD

I do have sympathy for a lot of young drivers, insurance costs are huge, maybe why there are so many uninsured drivers.

Something to think about too, when I was 17 my insurance was £300, now I'm 49 my insurance is £300 (well nearly) what you pay now looks to be what you pay for ever  :(

Same here. When I passed my test just before my 18th birthday, they said the costs would go down when I was 21 (assuming I made no claims). When I reached 21, it then moved up to 25. I'm 43 now and my insurance costs have either frozen or increased, even though I haven't made a claim in years.

Hi mate, I'll be 17 in a few months, and I've been hunting around for insurance for my car.
Ive found that Quinn is very cheap.

Dion!

I found it was exactly the same. 21, 25, 30 the drop in premiums just never came and now at 46 the premium doesn't seem to change at all.

Which, when you think about it is actually a drop - otherwise it would go up every year. Plus, there's a good chance (in my case at least) that you got better/higher performace/more valuable cars as you got older, yet your premiums stayed the same(ish)

That's just it, none of my cars were high performance and I didn't get a new car i.e a car of significant value until I was 33 and that was of a low insurance group anyway.

i got a decent deal through liverpool victoria but left it till i was 23 to take my test

I'm glad that is not the case :) I paid £1,000 and £1,500 for car insurance in the past and only pay £280 at 26 ;)

I didnt read it all.. but...

a little bit of me does have sympathy but I had to pay stupid prices, it doesn't excuse breaking the law! not driving like a 'insert rude word here' would result in less accident for young men and cheaper insurance for them :)

left it till i was 23 to take my test

Probably a very good idea now.

I certainly will not be able to afford to insure my son in a couple of years so he can go without a car for a while.

No harm taking the test at 17 but it's not necerssary to get a car immediately.

Steve.

though having said that my first years insurance was £1700 for a 56 plate 1.9 CDTI Astra. but everywhere else wanted +£2.5k

5 Years ago when my daughter was learning to drive
Tesco was the cheapest. Even as a 17 year old learner,
it was about £200 to add her to mine ( I bought a 106 for the purpose)
I have just tried to do the same for my lad,
Tesco are "looking for" circa £1200 for a 19 year old lad as an addition

That is just the point it is sexist. I know insurance companies base their premiums on statistics but there has to be a fairer way of doing it.
My son's policy cost more based on the fact he is male and because of our post code. When he was trying different companies for quotes he could have saved over £1k by being female and using his girlfriends post code. I think it would be much fairer if the penalty was loaded into the excess on the policy. The 30% NCB if achieved after a year in no way offsets the initial outlay, especially as the following years policies will always be loaded in the same manner.

Definately sexist.

I accidentally had my confused profile set to female, £300 cheaper, and LOADS more insurers on the list...

My best price so far, i managed to get a price out of Admiral of £1450 TPFT on a 2004/53 Ford focus 1.6, so not too bad compared to some of my friends!

I can see why the rates are do high. Quite a few of my GFs daughters friends have passed their tests fairly recently and most of them have crashed or ended up in a ditch. Usually through driving too fast. This is in the borders where there ain't a lot of traffic but there are a lot of twisty roads with tricky corners just waiting to catch the invincible new drivers. Thank god her pair haven't learnt yet. Too busy going off to uni in the big city where you don't really need a car. And yes it is definately sexist even though it is mostly the girls who have crazed their cars. Must be something to do with the Borders air.

That's about right - £140 to add my sister (17), £1250 to add me (18.5 at the time)
