Hi Guys,

May I please ask your opinions on the two lenses.

Has anybody owned both, and which one would you chose?

I currently have a Sigma 10-20, 17-55 and also a 50 1.8.

However, at times I wish that I had a longer lens.

Do I look at swapping the 17-55 for the 24-105, or do I just keep it and buy a telephoto?

Regards.

Keep 17-55 and just buy a 70-200 F4....

I found the best combo for a crop body to be
10-22
24-105 IS
100 macro
100-400 IS
Covers everything for me and i like the 24-105 for general walk about.

I use the 17-55 f/2.8 extensively on my D300. I would encourage you to keep it for it's IQ and versatility. The long end, however, isn't nearly long enough to suit my needs, so I have several options (which would imply that I've yet to find the best solution for me!) I have a 105 f/2.8 micro lens, a 70-200 f/2.8 VRII, and an 80-400 VR I. I also bought a 28-300 for a travel lens.

I like all of my lenses...no complaints about any of them...but if I had it all to do over again I'd have the 17-55, an 80-200 and a 300 f/4 plus a 150 f/2.8 macro.

Do you do any low light work? If so then keep your 17-55, besides if you sell this and get a zoom you will end up missing the range of the 17-55.

If you can afford the 70-200 F/4 L then go for it, great lens.

Alternate suggestion for you if cash is a problem.
Sell the 17-55 for lets say £650
Buy a tamron 17-50 2.8 (None IS Version) for £250 on par with canon 17-55
Then buy used 70-200 for £400 or put the little extra to it for new.

I have thought about that, but can't stop thinking that the canon 17-55 would be much better than the Tamron? Or if I did this I would regret not having the canon?

Keep 17-55 and just buy a 70-200 F4....

Agree, if you cannot afford do to this then sell the 17-55 and get the Tamron 17-55mm non-VC, I'm debating doing this myself at present as I'm desperate for a betetr telephoto but cannot afford the £350+ used price for the 70-200 F4. :(

I think the Tamron is not too far off the Canon 17-55 2.8, i.e I doubt the Canon is truely £300 better.
