17-40L series Canon

A 17-50mm is probably going to be lighter and more compact, it has a longer focal range and it's f2.8 and will probably be sharper too. However... the 17-40mm f4 is an L lens and for some that cancels out any advantage a non L has and L lust wins out.

There's nothing wrong with that, but IMVHO it's nothing to do with image quality or use. IMVHO 17-40mm use on crop bodies would plummet if it didn't have the L designation. Some people just want an L lens even if they'll never use a FF DSLR or 35mm SLR.

to the op, if your unhappy for any eason dont forget that jessops offer a 30 day money back no quabble garuntee aslong as you keep the box and receipt and it can be sold again, i know this as i work there!

to be honest i was told that a 24-105l would be the worst walk about lens on my 50d but i bought it anyway and i love it, it's all down to the individual and how they plan to use the lens

I can't understand why so many people are saying that the 17-40 isn't wide enough on a crop body, then suggest another lens that has a minimum focal length of 17mm ?????

Maybe it's not "long" enough for some ?

Personally I'd run with the 17-55 f2.8. It's wide when you need it to be, and long enough for portraits to, and the wide aperture is very useful. Yes it's expensive, but it is very good.

Seems like this post could be the start of a new world war! Lol

I use 17-40 as my walk a round on my 7D.
Why?
It's light.
Consistantly takes great photos.

I suppose on a 1.6 crop then that equates to 27-64 on a FF. Pretty close to a 24-70. Works for me.

I used this lens for a couple of years on my 20D and I thought it was a good walkabout lens, some of my favorite images have been taken with the 17-40 on a cropped sensor camera.

im sorry if i irritate some people on here, but i went for the 17-40 L as a walkabout/wide ish lens, the constant aperture is fast enough, ive never needed IS and is is plenty wide.
i chose it over the EFS lenses because i can use it on my film body, i wont have to sell it when i move to FF. on top of that, its blisteringly sharp and incredibly light. It does also have the L badge which appeals to some and it also has great resale value if you arent happy with it. Get one, you wont regret it
