17-40L Good choice?

Thinking of ordering a 17-40L off Kerso to replace my kit lens.

I'd rather buy one lens that will last years than upgrade to an L later on and am thinking 5D's are going to be a lot cheaper by next year so will make a good wide angle.

Good choice? reasoning? It's an old lens now though aswell :thinking:

Is the cashback on at the moment?
 
The 17-40 is a great lens and whilst it's old it's still an impressive piece of glass. Works very well with the 5D too. :)

three yes's is good lol just don't want to make a mistake, i'm going to have to eat beans on toast for at least a week as it is :lol:
 
If you want to take the lens onto a full frame camera at a later date there really isn't another lens to go for imho. If you were staying on a crop camera then the choice isn't as clear.

Oh, in answer to your question on cashback offers, there isn't any on at the moment. I'm eyeing up a 300 f/4 L at the moment so like you i'm hoping they do one soon! :D
 
That's the other thing, I'm thinking that full frame camera's are really going to drop in price (used 5d's) and an L lens should ideally be with me for a few years. Other than that an upgrade to 40d? what would be the lens of choice then? Trying to think ahead a bit, rather than waste money lol
 
For a crop camera in that range you have....

Tamron 17-50 f/2.8
Sigma 18-50 f/2.8
Canon 18-55 f/3.5-5.6 IS
Canon 17-55 f/2.8 IS
Canon EF-S 17-85mm f/4-5.6 IS
Canon 17-40 L f/4

Of those the Canon 17-55 f/2.8 IS is pretty hard to beat but the price tag does reflect that!

The Tamron and Sigma both give good performance at a very reasonable price.

The 18-55 IS gives very good performance at a low price but isn't really good enough to cut it with the above.

The 17-85 IS is another option but it's not a lens I really rate.
 
An awesome lens, wonderful build quality with a really nice 'look' to the images to produces.

I keep going through all of them lenses, reading reviews etc.. :lol: my heads farting

17-55 is 150notes more for 2.8 and IS that will hardly be used (by me) wide angle. I have a nifty for low light.

17-85 the distortion is putting me off as it's annoying me with the kit lens I have, It can't be straightened quickly in ps either as it's like a wavey line.

Is the 17-40 sharp at f4 or does it need to stopped down a bit? compared to the others.
 
17-40 is sharp wide open and a great lens. I sold mine but then missed it so bought another. Actually using it this time too.
 
An example of my kit lens distortion :lol: If you try to straighten quickly in ps the ends then look slightly curled up.

Please let us know the price Kerso quotes you - I'm very interested in one of these myself.
 
I have the 17-40 on a 5D and it distorts quite a lot at the wide end if your not carefull, it can give a very odd perspective (As all super wide lens's do/can).. but its a great bit of kit and i never leave home without it.. although on a FF its not the ideal walk about lens.. tis a bit wide.. lol.. but i put it on my 40D and its nearly ideal..
 
a great lens it was all I used for the first year, but with the 5 d you might want more lenght that is the reason i swapped mine for a 28-70, as for the age dont worry about it they also hold their value well
 
I'm thinking when I can finally upgrade to 5D (next year lol) that 17-40 and 24-105 will be great combination.

Bought the 17-40 from Kerso just before Xmas as I had the Sigma 17-70 as a stand in. First real try was a couple of days ago under the D-Lites and, well the Sigma will have to go now. For the price of it, I think it is a cracker even though it comes a little short to the sigma at the long end, but what's a couple of steps forward.

I understand youre looking to purchase for cropped frame and full frame and probably the 17-40L will be your best bet, but dont get carried away that the Canon L's are mind blowingly better than other makes or models.

Thanks Dave :) not at all, I have looked at the image quality from all the other lenses, over and over again lol

It's mainly the build quality (and possible full frame) that's swayed me to the 17-40 as it's going to have to last me a good few years.
 
Thats Ok then Ian, I'm not saying on this site, but I didnt want you to get carried along with all the BULL that i hear as its a lot of money. I know youre not buying a 17-85 IS but the image quality isnt that much different and in low light the IS does produce a sharper picture.
And there isnt that much difference between the 17-40 and the sigma 17-70 either.

before christmas it was the same price but you could collect £70 cashback making it a even bigger bargin at £330!!!

if you are not in a hurry you may want to wait just incase they do another cash back.
 
Hi Ian, have you ordered your 17-40 yet? I sometimes wish i went for the 17-40 instead of the 70-200, Gareth at RGB in Middlesbrough has a 17-40 on his 5D and i saw some samples from Saltburn on it, there's something about the image quality that sets it off from everything else, i'm still debating wether to get this lens or a sigma 18-50 F/2.8 which is both cheaper, faster and longer. I think the canon will be the better lens but wether it's £200 better i dunno.

Hey Wez, not ordered yet, payday on thursday for me :) I'm not sure whether it will be worth the extra 200 over the Sigma on image quality, but... the build quality is by all accounts exceptional, so hopefully it will last me for plenty of years. I'm using the wider end of my kit lens more and more so this will be on my camera probably 90% of the time aswell.

I also keep reading about the excellent contrast and nice colours from this lens. I will have to do a comparision with the kit lens when I get it, not fair I know considering the price difference :)
