Which would you go for?
17-40 L is probably the obvious choice but given that the non L 20-35 and the siggy are f3.5-4.5 then I'd only be losing .5 of an f at the long end and actually gaining the same at the wide end.
I'v seen the old 20-35mm f2.8 go for a similar price to the newer non L version.
Mate has the Siggy 15-30 and it seemed nice but there's so much bad press about Sigma is it best to avoid?

I have recently just bought the canon 17-40mm L & i love it,it is a lens i will never sell i dont think.:)

Until you can afford to upgrade to the 16-35L f2.8 that is ;)

The 17-40L is a lovely lens and represents superb value for money, especially being an L glass so well worth buying if that's your budget.

17-40L f4 is a great lens as a wide FF lens or wide (ish) cropped lens providing f4 suits you.

I've owned a couple and use it for landscapes so rarely go to f4 never mind need anything faster.

It's often regarded as sharper than the 16-35L 2.8 anyway.

Grrr, just got last minute sniped on a 17-40 on ebay.
There's a 15-30 finishin soon, might get it just so I have something to put on my 5D when I get it and then take my time to get a nice cheap 17-40.

Hi fixedimage

Have not used the 17-40L but can recommend the Siggy 15-30; those extra 2 mm can make a difference, of course.

It does flare like hell with a 5D though but this can create some interesting /creative effects. Sold mine and got a 12-24 and 14 prime but REALLY wish I had not.

If you can get a Siggy for a couple of hundred it is a fun plaything until you save up for the 16-35L. IMHO, Sigma QC is not the best but this is an EX lens and generally copies are well made.

Good luck with your purchase whichever way you go.

Had a cheeky bid on a 16-35mm f2.8 last night but it went up up and above my budget.
Then got Kerso's price list and decided to splash on a new 17-40 but he is out of stock! Aargh!
There's a 15-30 on the bay that I'll try and make mine for just now.

17-40mm = Excellent lens for the price. I used to have one attached to my 5D and it was fantastic as a landscape lens. I found the longer focal lengths were a bit restrictive though so I opted for a 24-105 instead as it was more suited for a walkabout lens.
