Hi Guys and girls

As the title suggests....

I am currently using a 17-40 f4L. I may have the opportunity to get my hands on a 17-55 EF-s F2.8 IS. How do they stack up as comparisons. Am i being bamboozled by my own 'L' glass and thinking that may be better because of its 'L' Status?

I do a lot of shooting in woodland where it can be quite dark and dindgy, so the larger aperture on the EF-S would be a pro if i was stacking up pros and cons.

If i got it i couldn't realisically keep both, as i wouldn't see the point, so i'd trade on the 17-40.

What is everyone elses views?

on a crop sensor, unless you need the L's weathersealing, the 17-55 will undoubtedly be the better option. Twice as fast, even more when you consider the IS, more range, and probably not much in it optically. Sell the 17-40 to a full frame owner ;)

it is a thought, although the weather sealing did come in very handy in january when i did a load of shots in the snow and it did get pretty wet on the surface

I believe the 17-40 manifest a bit of distortion as well which you might want too factor in. I don't know how noticeable it is on a crop though.

Get the 17-55, fantastic lens. 17-40L is a superb super-wide on full frame but really makes very little sense on a cropper, given the alternatives.

The 17-55mm is the best lens you can put on a crop body bar primes.
the 24-70mm is a lower resolution than the 17-55mm because it is designed for smaller sensors.

Another vote for 40D + 17-55 :)
