Hi everyone, some advice please.....i'm thinking of getting my first L ,and i dont know wether to get the "old 16-35"or wait for the price to come down on the new one:thinking:
any problems with the old one have supposed to have been corrected ,but are they that bad in the first place?

I'm sure it will be worth the wait and extra green stuff.

All marketing talk aside, the bigger front of the lens should give it a worthwile advantage over the old one and I'm quite sure Canon will not spend all that money on research and development for arbitrary improvements...

Surely not enough to make all owners of the old ones bin them but I would go for the new one if I were you!!

I can tell you 1st hand the original 16-35L is the finest wide angle lens made.;)
It is one of my sharpest lenses and would never sell it.:)

Hey Dod

Looks as sharp to me as any 6 tacks you can bring!!

What P/P did you do or is this straight off the camera?

They make a big hoo-ha on DP Review about corner to corner sharpness in the new one...sales talk then?? :suspect:

One mans opinion is another mans argument.;)

I love my 16-35L and every image that comes out of it is crystal clear and tack sharp.

The only PP I did with this image was resizing and a little USM in PS..:)

I would never dream of upgrading this to the Mk2 version..:nono:

What camera do you have to put this on? On my 20D at 16 I get vignetting.

Carl.

 Are you using filters Carl? - I don't get vignetting from the Sigma 12-24 on a full frame. Believe Tim is eithee 1.3 or FF (he has pretty much the entire Canon stock though  )

I can't vouch for the 16 - 35L, but I have an even older 20 - 35 2.8L, and it is a supersharp piece of glass.

I haven't used it for a while, but a quick search turned up this pic. The pic is nothing special, but it does demonstrate the ability of the lens.

Here is a review of the 16 - 35:

That can't be right, I have a Tokina 12-24mm and no vignetting at 12mm...

Just checked and I was wrong! There's no vignetting so not sure which lens/camera I had seen it on!

Will try it out in a few weeks at the next race I attend.

Carl.

thanks for the replies,
the body i,m using at the moment is the 400d,but im looking for a 5d,has anyone got a minter for sale?

Have you thought of the cheaper 17-40L? That is an incredibly sharp lens. Can't vouch for the 16-35L... yet ;)

Hades - you've blasphemed!!!

Your sig says 28-105 f/4L. Although the average aperture on the 28-105 is 4, your 24-105 will be feeling very unloved!! ;)

lol ooops!!! Changed - cheers for pointing that out Johnny ;)

 can't have unhappy lenses

thanks Hades
i have indeed looked at the 17-40,but if your going to jump in you may as well get your head under the water. my word does that make sense??
thats why i'm now thinking of getting the mk11 16-35,had a quote off Kerso, but ive now got to convince my own head and pockets.

will somebody PLEASE say "buy it mate, its only money".:naughty:

I wouldn't bother with the 16-35mm mk2, isnt it like £500 more than the 16-35mm, not worth it imo, especially until i see what the real difference is in them

I'm ususally a 'JUST BUY IT!!!!' person. But, only get this IF:
1. you're definately going full frame
2. extreme corner to corner sharpness is an absolute must on the FF.

I'veheard the mkI is extremely able - if you need absolute perfection then mkII.

Actually, I've convinced myself. get the MKII.

:)

thanks jonny
i think so too,and as regards ff i'm going for a 5d,in for a penny and all that.

:D

LOL - let us know the results (soon) :D hehe
