I have been doing a lot of research and would like to change from the 17-40L to the 16.35L for low light.

I have some questions.

1. Is the mkII an essential - or is the MkI a good lens too? Seems the FM score is the same for both.

2. I see a lot of talk about softness in teh corners, and many posters mention it is worse than the 17-40L. Now I dont have issues with my current lens, but would not like to step back.

Any other comments?

The mark1 was a bit hit and miss if it was a good one, but they are miles better than the 17-40 for handling distortion.
I have both and tend to use the 17-40 if I want really sharp and the 16-35 if I know it's going to be a shot that will suffer a lot of distortion with the 17-40, although tbh there is very little difference between the sharpness of the two.
It's a crackin lens.
Bearing in mind that is on a 5D, I have never tried the 16-35 on the 40D.

So the 17-40 is sharper?

yes but not by much, unless you are really pixel peeping I don't notice the difference, I have the MK1 version.
I really should sell the 17-40 and use the 16-35 more.
