Hi all,
I need to buy a 15 metre long HDMI lead,I've heard that price makes no difference in picture quality as leads this length start at about £20 and go to hundreds! How much should I spend?

Umm... 15 metres can be a long way for HDMI. The problem is the cable affects the transmitter. A cheap transmitter has less ability to drive a longer cable - especially if the electrical properties make it slightly more difficult to drive. Having said that, if it works, it works.

If I wanted a 15m cable, I'd try a cheapo ebay one. If that didn't work, I'd get a "better" one. Fundamentally, it's transmitting digital data. If it works, it works. If it doesn't, you'll know about it.

Anyone who claims "colours are deeper" (or other twaddle) with very expensive HDMI cables either has an interest in the company selling them or is easily influenced by marketing/wanting an expensive cable to be better....

The two thing you need to know about leads are One good plugs Gold connections are best Two a good fat lead will be much better then thin ones, a fatter lead (coper inside that is) has less resistance so low loss for the signal.
Hope that helps you

The manual for my old audio kit insisted that I use gold plated fuses in the mains plug. I found that B & Q fuses used to give me a "grungy" sound while Tescos own brand gave a "tighter" mid range (obviously not the value fuses)

* It's true about the gold fuses, the rest may be total rowlocks

Thanks all- this is for a steam proof tv going in a Bathroom - first one we've fitted ! Will report back when it's going!

So they recommend (not you Chaz) Gold plated Connections on Leads, but how many Sockets on equipment are gold plated?
Seems like a sales pitch to me, the Socket would be the weakest link, so why buy Gold plated leads

so why buy Gold plated leads
Because gold doesn't oxidise so the contact is pristine even after leaving the cable out for many months. The act of physically plugging/unplugging a cable helps remove any oxidisation.

Not that it's expensive - I've just bought a 2m micro HDMI -> HDMI lead from ebay with gold plated connectors for £2.65 delivered. Of course, it may well be gold spray paint, but we'll see (still in the post) :)
